The Ministry of Oil revealed, on Wednesday, that there are advanced discussions to develop the Akkaz gas field in Anbar Governorate, while noting the presence of hydrocarbon compositions in the western region that are expected to contain large quantities of gas or oil .
The ministry's spokesman, Assem Jihad, said in a statement reported by "Al-Sabah" newspaper, "The ministry is showing great interest in the gas file in the western region," explaining that "the crutch field was offered in the licensing rounds, and it was for the (Korean Kokaz) company, and the company started development operations, However, the events of 2014 and the control of the terrorist “ISIS” over some areas of Iraq, including Anbar Governorate, stopped the development operations in this field and the company was forced to withdraw by mutual consent, which led to the obstruction of the project to develop this important field, which is one of the largest gas fields, which is called ( Free gas) and not gas associated with oil operations, that is, gas is extracted from the ground .”
He pointed out that "the presence of hydrocarbon compositions in the western region is expected to contain large quantities of gas or oil, but indicators show the presence of more gas than oil," revealing "advanced discussions with one of the international companies to develop the Akkaz field ."
The Akkaz field is located south of Al-Qaim city, and is considered the largest gas field in Iraq, as it contains 5.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and it is hoped that the project will provide tens of thousands of job opportunities .
