What is democracy, and what is the Global Democracy Index?
It is heartfelt that we list for you the ten most democratic countries in the world for the year 2023, and tell you about the least democratic countries in return. Let us first agree on the definition of democracy, and let us talk a little about the global democracy index.
Democracy, in its simplest definition, is a form of government in which citizens either set the laws by which they will live or elect representatives to act as their agents in the decision-making process.
If citizens are the ones who make laws and have the ability to make decisions themselves, then democracy is called “direct democracy, pure democracy, or true democracy), and when they choose their representatives, then this type of democracy is referred to as “representative democracy.”
But what is it ? The main characteristics of democratic countries:
* A multi-party political system and a competitive environment
* Free and fair elections
* A transparent and open country that respects the laws
* A country committed to the peaceful transfer of power
* Independent media that is not subject to government control
Preserving civil and political liberties for every citizen, regardless of whether he is from the majority or minority
What is the Global Democracy Index?
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) collects data annually to determine levels of democracy around the world, in what is called the "Global Democracy Index". Where this indicator is based on a scale from 0 to 10 to measure the following indicators in all countries of the world annually:
* Civil liberties
* Electoral process and pluralism
* Government work
* Political culture
* Political participation
Taking into account these five categories, the index divides the countries of the world into:
Countries that enjoy democracies Complete (8 to 10): These countries are characterized by the presence of:
* Free and fair elections
* Political rights and civil liberties
* A strong political culture
* A government that works effectively in the interest of citizens
* The presence of diverse and independent media
* An independent judiciary
* Democracy is constantly flourishing
2. Defective democracies: (6 to 8): Countries that fall into this category have:
* Free and fair elections
* Political rights and civil liberties
* Insufficient or ineffective governance * A
backward political culture
* Weak political participation
3. Countries of Hybrid Regimes: (4 to 6): They are countries in which there are:
* Irregularities in elections
* Government pressure on the opposition
* Weak political culture
* Ineffective government
* Weak rule of law
* Weak civil society
* Pressure on the press
* The judiciary non-independent
4. Authoritarian regimes (0-4): These are regimes in which:
* the absence of free and fair elections
* the absence of political pluralism in the state
* the abuse of civil liberties
* censored or state-owned media
* the non-independent judiciary
* censorship of citizens
* the absence of freedom of expression

Have you ever wondered what are the most democratic countries in the world? Well what about the worst? You might think that countries like the United States are at the top of the list and that Arab countries are jostling to take their place in the list of the 10 worst countries in terms of democracy, but that is not quite the case, as countries such as Norway, New Zealand and Finland rank at the top of the list (it is noticeable that these countries are also in List of the happiest countries in the world), and there is only one Arab country in the list of the 10 worst countries.
