The Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that renewable water reserves rose to 5.8 billion cubic meters, and partly compensated for the quantities lost during the past dry seasons.
The Minister of Water Resources, Awn Dhiab Abdullah, said in a press statement, "There is a calculated balance of groundwater in renewable quantities that reached 5.8 billion cubic meters due to the heavy rains in the western desert, as well as the eastern side with the Iranian borders."
He added that "the improvement of water storage has a significant impact on the agricultural reality, by approving the cultivation of vast areas of land, indicating that the ministry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, has achieved good results, especially in the use of pivot irrigation methods and has worked to reduce the amounts of water used and distribute it fairly among all Areas where the dunum productivity was high.
He added, "The ministry instructed the Groundwater Department to monitor wells in the aforementioned areas in order to know the changes that occur by increasing their levels, and to provide the ministry with accurate information about that."
Diab pointed out that "the ministry's estimates indicate, after the heavy rains during the current season, that the dams in the Western Desert in particular are full and there are significant reserves of water, which indicates compensation for the shortage that occurred during the previous dry years." He pointed out that there are large reserves of water in the region. Tharthar Lake has a volume of 40 billion cubic meters, but it can only be extracted through pumping stations, and therefore a decision will be taken regarding determining and installing the size of the required pumps that we will need to use during the next summer to strengthen the Euphrates River.
