The US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region (Irvin Hicks Jr.) criticized what he described as the "decline" of the regional government's commitment to human rights and its move against freedom of opinion and public freedoms within the region. As he says.
The US consul said in his statements, which were reported by the Kurdish Rudaw Network and translated by (Baghdad Today), that these moves violate "law and international agreements," according to him.
He pointed out that the US government has become "concerned" about what he described as "the slippage of human rights within the region and the increase in violations based on gender and against minorities residing in Kurdistan."
Irvin also stressed that freedom of expression and the press are being subjected to violations at the hands of the regional authorities, in addition to "violations of women's rights, equality and treatment on the basis of gender."
The US diplomat continued his criticism of the situation in Iraqi Kurdistan, saying, "There is discrimination against other sects and ethnicities within Kurdistan by the authorities and institutions associated with them."
And he stressed the need for "the regional government to rectify the situation and stop the current violations to reassure its partners in Washington and to keep the American support for the Kurdistan government continuing," according to his description.
