Yesterday, Wednesday, the Presidency of the Republic announced that a draft amendment to the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law would be sent to Parliament.
A brief statement by the Presidency of the Republic, received by (Al-Mada), stated that “the draft amendment to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. (50) of (2017) was sent to the House of Representatives.”
For his part, the rapporteur of the Supreme Commission for Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs at the Ministry of Health, Ahmed Abadi Abdel-Hassan, said, "There are ongoing meetings headed by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, to limit the spread of the drug phenomenon."
Abdul Hassan added, "The last meeting was yesterday, in which the Prime Minister affirmed that our current battle is a fateful and continuous battle to eradicate the scourge of drugs."
He pointed out, "The prime minister's directives were clear, sober and strong, and push the file of drug eradication forward."
Abdul Hassan explained, "The first recommendations were to open training centers for the treatment of addicts in the main governorates, and to start with at least five large centers with a capacity of 100 beds, and Al-Sudani directed that all financial and logistical capabilities be harnessed to establish these centers."
He pointed out that "the other directive was to strengthen the capabilities of the security forces and unify efforts by providing them with advanced detection devices, drones and trained sniffer dogs, as well as directives in cooperation with the Supreme Judicial Council to renew penalties for drug dealers and traffickers."
Abdul Hassan added, "The Prime Minister also paid attention to the great role of the media, and ordered the Ministries of Education and Higher Education to launch awareness and education programs on the dangers of drugs."
He stressed, "The number of drug users who were received in health centers during the past year is approximately 4,000 drug users," expecting that "the number will increase to more than 6,000 drug users."
He pointed out, "The capital, Baghdad, has three centers for the treatment of drug abusers, in addition to psychiatric wards in all hospitals."
He also talked about “the presence of centers in the holy governorates of Karbala, Basra and Anbar, and we have allocated a piece of land to establish health centers in the governorates of Najaf, Kirkuk and Anbar.”
And Abdul Hassan reported, "There is a project for a health center in Diwaniyah Governorate that has reached advanced stages, and soon it will witness the opening."
And he stated, "The health control is conducting inspection tours of cafes to detect violations in cooperation with the security services, as we launched at the end of last June the (Anti-Drug Week) campaign."
And he went on to "monitor a number of violations and refer the perpetrators to the judiciary," noting that "drugs target young people between the ages of 18-35 years."
