    Hazem Majeed Naji, advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, expressed his country's readiness to activate the Iranian Shalamja railway project with Basra Governorate.
    This came during his meeting with the Iranian Minister of Economic and Financial Affairs, Ehsan Khandozi, according to the Iranian ministry.
    Khandozi said during the meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy, that despite the negative atmosphere and obstacles created by some critics, relations between the two countries have improved a lot over the past year with the will of the President of the Iraqi Republic, "Abdul Latif Rashid" and his prime minister, Muhammad Shayaa al-Sudani, noting that he It is time to go beyond political issues to establish deeper relations and establish different economic zones as well.
    On the procedures adopted in completing the "Shalamcheh-Basra" railway project by Iran, Khandozi stated that negotiations are being held with companies that have declared their willingness to be present in the free trade zones of the two countries as well as the joint industrial zones.
    In turn, the advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister noted in a speech he delivered during this meeting that the common denominators between the two countries in all political, historical, religious and cultural fields are so many that they cannot be counted in any way.
    He touched on the bilateral agreements concluded between the two countries, and said that the most important of these agreements is the completion of the "Shalamcheh-Basra" railway project, indicating that all the issues and problems that caused the complexity of this issue were identified, and all the necessary approvals were obtained two days before the visit to Iran. In meetings conducted with officials of the two countries.
    He pointed out, uh, now that all the equipment and personnel are in the desired locations and the obstacles have been removed, and we are ready to activate this project.
    Referring to the continuation of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Al-Khalidi affirmed the Iraqi government's endeavor to implement the agreements and understandings reached with Iran as soon as possible, adding that the Iraqi government also stresses the establishment of joint free trade and industrial zones with Iran.
    In April 2023, the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Mohibis Al-Saadawi, announced that an agreement had been concluded with the Iranian side to implement a railway to transport passengers between the cities of Shalamja and Basra.
    The agreement includes starting operations to remove mines planted since the eight-year war between the two countries, in the border areas.
    The agreement also includes a project to construct a movable bridge on the Shatt al-Arab, to be completed within a year and a half.
