Jordanian electricity enters Iraq and Al-Rutba is the first beneficiary area

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity revealed the completion of the electrical connection with Jordan and its entry into partial service at the end of this month, with a supply capacity of 40 megawatts as a first stage.
And the rise in temperatures to more than 50 degrees Celsius in various Iraqi governorates caused a reduction in the hours of supplying electric power as a result of the suspension of a number of supply stations and their going out of service, in addition to the sabotage operations that targeted power transmission towers. This was according to what an Iraqi official announced to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
The city of Al-Rutba, west of Anbar Governorate, on the border with Jordan, is preparing to complete the electrical connection project to the national grid again, after nine years of its residents’ reliance on private generators. targeting power transmission towers.
In this regard, Jordanian Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh announced that the first phase of the electrical interconnection project with Iraq will begin this month, pointing out that the talks between the two countries seek to reach the complementary link between them.
Al-Kharabsheh explained, in a press interview, that the electrical interconnection project with Iraq is being implemented in two phases. In the first interconnection phase, it was agreed with the Iraqi side to start the interconnection line between the “Al-Rishah – Al-Rutba” regions, and it depends on a medium voltage, and it is expected to be ready before The end of this August.
The Jordanian minister stressed the importance of the agreement between Jordan and Iraq, as it would increase the quantities of Iraqi crude oil imported to Jordan to 15,000 barrels, instead of 10,000 barrels per day.
For his part, the spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, confirmed that his ministry is working to raise the production of electric power and increase processing hours through the strategic projects it is working on. "There is a relative improvement in processing hours, despite the high temperatures," he said. Musa revealed, during his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the completion of the first phase of the electrical connection with the Kingdom of Jordan, and the readiness of the network to pay part of the energy to the city of Al-Rutba (west) to increase the hours of electricity supply.
Moussa explained that the first phase of the project will witness the production of 150 megawatts, of which the share of Rutba will be 40 megawatts due to its proximity to the Iraqi-Jordanian border, and it is considered at the forefront of the processing areas within the Iraqi borders. He pointed out that the connection process between the Jordanian Al-Rishah station and the Al-Qaim and Al-Rutba stations in western Iraq took into account the specifications approved by the Jordanian and Iraqi sides according to the specified time ceiling, and with technical determinants of effective economic feasibility on the electrical network.
Concerning the sabotage and targeting of power transmission towers in the desert areas within the Iraqi borders, Musa confirmed the formation of a joint operations room between the Ministries of Electricity, Interior and Defense to secure the paths of the electric power transmission lines by operating drones and installing thermal cameras, in addition to deploying emergency regiments to protect the network. from vandalism.
Preparations for Al-Rutba
The District Commissioner of Al-Rutba district, Imad Al-Rishawi, said that the city of Al-Rutba is ready to receive the electrical connection after years of interruption, due to the sabotage operations that the supply lines were subjected to and the complete outage of the network, which prompted the residents to rely on private generators.
Al-Rishawi told The New Arab that the city’s power station was completed in order to receive electric power from the power transmission line network coming from Jordan, after the wiring of the transmission line from the Trebil border port to the electricity distribution station 132 in the Rutba district was completed.
He pointed out that the technical works for this line are fully ready, and that more than 40,000 residents of the city of Rutba and the surrounding villages are happy with this connection, and work will be done to deliver electric power to remote villages and Akashat district (to the west) during the second phase of the processing operations.
For his part, the citizen, Asaad Ibrahim, said that the city's residents suffer a lot from the lack of electricity supply over the past years, and that the last four years witnessed a complete interruption of electric power, which prompted them to rely on private generators, at high financial costs.
Ibrahim added that private generators often stop working due to the lack of fuel and high temperatures, in addition to the government's lack of interest in providing fuel at the official government price.
And he indicated that the Rutba region is considered one of the remote areas, and the distance between it and other cities is very long, and it is surrounded by vast desert areas from all directions, which makes it difficult to provide the necessary services and deliver safe water to the population who depend on well water.
Insufficient energy
Experts believe that the quantities imported from the electrical energy through the direct connection with the Kingdom of Jordan and the Arabian Gulf are insufficient to fill the large shortage of electrical energy in all Iraqi governorates.
In this regard, the expert in the field of energy, Kovand Sherwani, said that the electrical connection with Jordan has a good economic feasibility compared to the great energy shortage the country is facing, especially in Anbar Governorate. And Sherwani indicated, during his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, that the total capacity of the electrical connection with the Kingdom of Jordan fills only 10 percent of the governorate’s need, while Iraq needs more than 35,000 megawatts.
He stressed that the ideal solution to the problem of electricity in Iraq is the establishment of high-level electric power stations with a large production capacity, because Iraq has the necessary resources to operate these stations, if it invests in real gas production locally from oil emissions and dispenses with wasting money to import gas and oil derivatives from neighboring countries.
