Shafaq News/ The Minister of Interior of the Kurdistan Region, Reber Ahmed, renewed on Tuesday the forced return of displaced Iraqis present on the territory of the region to their homes.
Ahmed said in a press conference held today in Erbil: When we were facing a major financial crisis, which was represented by cutting off the region’s share of the financial budget of Iraq and the salaries of its employees, at that time when we were waging a war against ISIS, we received more than two million displaced people and refugees from inside and outside Iraq. Stressing that "there was no decision issued by us for these displaced people and refugees to seek refuge in the region. Rather, it was a result of security conditions and the lack of reassurance for the future. Many people were displaced from the governorates of Iraq and came to Kurdistan."
He added that it was the decision of the regional government and the people of Kurdistan to proceed with relief to the afflicted, indicating that a large portion of those displaced people had returned to their homes, but until now we have nearly a million displaced people and refugees in the Kurdistan Region.
The region's Interior Minister criticized the handling of officials in the Federal Ministry of Migration and Displacement and the Iraqi government in a manner he described as "irresponsible with the file of displaced persons and refugees in the Kurdistan Region."
He continued by saying that: There are Iraqi citizens who prefer to live inside displacement camps in the Kurdistan Region than to return to their homes, and if a displaced person decides to stay, we will put him on the eye and head, stressing, “If we have a loaf of bread, we will share it with those displaced people who will decide to stay in Kurdistan.”
Ahmed also stressed that “the regional government attaches great importance to providing aid and assistance to the afflicted, and we will continue in this vein,” stressing that “if there is a plan for the displaced in the region to return to their original cities and regions, we will be major supporters of it, and we have formed a special committee for this to provide Facilities in this field.
The Region's Interior Minister added: But many times, Baghdad directs baseless accusations against the Kurdistan Region regarding the displaced and refugees, especially by the Ministry of Immigration and Displacement, which always looks at this file with a political eye, as it has never looked at this file with a humanitarian eye at any time. Especially as we approach the local elections scheduled to be held at the end of this year.
Reber Ahmed called on the federal government, the international community, and United Nations organizations to continue supporting refugee and displaced camps in the Kurdistan Region because those in them are going through very difficult living conditions, especially with the advent of autumn, the approach of winter, and the cold weather, noting that “there are no heating supplies available in the camps.” Those camps.
