The framework pushes for the purchase of Russian weapons, which Washington rejects, and allegations of the presence of faction leaders near Israel
Baghdad/ Tamim Al-Hassan
Baghdad falls between two dangers if it goes too far in its relationship with Moscow and continues the anti-Israel and Washington rhetoric.
With the arrival of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani, to Moscow, talk resumed of purchasing Russian weapons.
Several years ago, Washington threatened to “punish Baghdad” if the latter decided to purchase a defense system from Russia.
On the other hand, the factions’ threats against Israel began to escalate, while leaders in the PMF published photos of their presence in an Arab country near Israel’s borders.
Leaks reaching Al-Mada indicate that there is pressure from the coordination framework on the Sudanese to buy the S-400 system from Russia.
The day before yesterday, the Sudanese met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, hours after the former arrived in Moscow on a two-day visit.
But so far, Baghdad has not announced the signing of any agreements except one memorandum of understanding regarding the return of “smuggled funds.”
In 2018, former Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari embarrassed his government when he said that Iraq intended to buy a Russian missile system, two days after Baghdad denied the news.
The US State Department at the time had warned the Iraqi authorities and other countries of the consequences of concluding deals to purchase Russian weapons, in accordance with the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (AATSA). That year, former US President Donald Trump signed the “Confronting America’s Enemies Through Sanctions” law directed against Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
The S-400 Triumph weapon is Russia's newest long-range anti-aircraft missile system, designed to destroy aircraft as well as cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles.
The weapon is also used against ground targets, and the S-400 has a range of up to 400 kilometers, and it is a missile capable of destroying targets at an altitude of 30 kilometers, according to what Russian news sites say. The talk about US sanctions comes with Al-Sudani’s announcement during his meeting with Putin of “Iraq’s firm position on the Palestinian issue, which affirms the right of the Palestinian people to live in dignity and justice.” Al-Sudani called, according to a statement from the latter’s office, “Russia to take urgent action with the permanent members of the Security Council to stop the ongoing attacks on the Palestinian territories.”
On the other hand, the Russian President said in circulated statements commenting on the events in Gaza, “This is a clear example of the clear failure of the United States of America’s policy in the Middle East and the attempt to manipulate any settlement between the Israelis and the Palestinians.” Washington adopts a pro-Tel Aviv policy in the war against Hamas, at a time when an American aircraft carrier has arrived in Israel and another is moving to the region. Yesterday, the Israeli army published photos of the arrival of the first plane carrying American ammunition.
The Israeli military spokesman said that the payload “will allow major strikes to be carried out, and it also comes in preparation for other scenarios.”
It is expected that Israel will target Iraqi factions on the border with Syria or inside Iraqi territory. The day before yesterday, websites close to the armed groups published pictures that they said belonged to “Abu Alaa al-Wala’i” and Hassan al-Kaabi, the leaders of the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades and the Nujaba Movement - within the PMF factions - while they were in Lebanon near the border with Israel.
Hours later, Hezbollah in Lebanon announced it had adopted an attack on Israeli areas, while the Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq threatened to target American bases in Iraq and the region if they intervened in the battle between the Palestinian factions and Israel.
The Phalange was subjected to an attack in 2018 in the border town of Al-Qaim, which the PMF said at the time was carried out with “Israeli aircraft” and caused the death of the faction’s missile official.
A copy of the threat from the brigades present in Syria came during the firing of missiles from Syria towards the Golan Heights, which is under Israeli control.
In 2021, “Ashab al-Kahf,” an Iraqi group claiming resistance and believed to be a front for well-known factions, claimed to have fired five missiles at the “Yesod Hamala” area in northeastern Israel near the Golan.
In the same year, “Abu Azrael,” a prominent fighter in the Imam Ali Brigades - one of the PMF factions - published a blog post in which he said that the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades (one of the PMF factions) and the Nujaba Movement were mobilizing volunteers in order to open a new front against Israel. He added that some fighters had previously been sent, referring to Syria.
Last February, the Washington Post said that Iran, with the help of Iraqi militias, “smuggled weapons into Syria as humanitarian aid following the devastating earthquake that struck Syria.”
The faction leaders and leaders of the coordination framework had expressed a position in support of (Al-Aqsa Flood), which is the name of the operation launched by Hamas against Israel last Saturday.
Yesterday, the so-called Minister of Al-Sadr Saleh Al-Iraqi, who is close to the leader of the movement, called on the latter’s supporters to wear the white shroud “to terrify the enemies.”
Al-Sadr had called for a million people to gather tomorrow, Friday, in Tahrir Square, in central Baghdad, “in support of Palestine,” before announcing his readiness to send drinking water to Gaza. Meanwhile, Ihsan Al-Shammari, head of the Center for Political Thinking, warned of “repercussions that are not in the government’s interest if the relationship between Baghdad and Moscow escalates.”
Al-Shammari said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that the Sudanese visit to Russia is important “to show the personality of the Prime Minister and his government that it is firm on the principle of balance in foreign relations.”
In addition, “the government is in line with the policies of countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia, which has balanced its relationship and approached Russia as a country that is heavily involved in the Middle East.”
Al-Shammari believes that the Sudanese has a desire to invite Russian companies to invest in the field of energy and other fields while other countries refuse.
But in return, he stressed that strengthening the relationship with Moscow “will have effects if it is translated into agreements between the two countries, especially in the military field.”
Regarding Sudanese’s recent statements during the meeting with Putin, Al-Shammari said, “These statements will be subject to question and provocation from Washington, which is approaching a clash with Russia.]
