Unofficial landfill sites threaten Baghdad

While Baghdad and the rest of the governorates are suffering from the phenomenon of pollution, which has been exacerbated by unsanitary landfill operations, it has been revealed that the country disposes of about 40 million tons of “solid waste” annually.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Jassim Al-Falahi, told Al-Sabah: “The waste sector is very important and vital, and through it we can achieve sustainable development goals, as Iraq annually discards about 40 million tons of solid waste,” noting that “one individual discards Between 750 and 1,250 kilograms per day, which is the highest in all countries of the world, due to the phenomenon of waste in society.”
He explained, “Iraq is a large producer of waste, which has become valuable, as the focus is on rational waste management,” pointing out that “there is what is called the (circular economy), which begins with collecting, sorting, and recycling waste, ending with converting it into energy, and it is the most important adoption.” “This sector can accommodate about 100,000 workers.”
Al-Falahi continued, “The state must stop providing the service and the private sector should undertake this, as is done in all countries of the world, to stop the waste of public money, fight corruption, and give a major role in sustaining the lives of youth groups in every region. There must also be an entity or A committee or small company linked to a factory or conversion station and then transported to waste recycling plants,” stressing “the need for all state ministries to include special amounts in their plans for treatment units.”
The landfill sites in Baghdad are the largest in the country, due to the large population in the capital, which rings the alarm bell at all levels, with the decline of the green cover and the spread of building blocks.
Senior Chief Engineer, Ahmed Abdul-Ilah, Assistant Director of the Environment Department in Baghdad Governorate, criticized the lack of oversight and resolution regarding sanitary landfill sites.
Abdul-Ilah told “Al-Sabah”: “The largest unsanitary dumping site is in Al-Rashid Camp, in addition to Al-Rustamiyah and the outskirts of Baghdad, and we are addressing the Operations Command to prevent waste vehicles from entering these sites, but without a response.” He added that “the ideal solution to this problem is Activating oversight in municipal departments and activating the work of security forces,” indicating “the existence of two official waste dumping sites in Nahrawan and Al-Nabai.”
Regarding how to bury waste, Abdel-Ilah explained: “There are brick factories that excavate the soil, which leads to cavitations. We exploit them in turn and lay out specific types of plastics and special pipes to drain the sedimented leachate into the sewers.” He explained, “We bury the waste with a thickness of 30-50 cm and then spread it.” Dust of the same thickness, then waste, then dust.”
For his part, environmental expert, Thaer Yousef, warned of the dangers of unhealthy landfilling, calling for optimal utilization of waste.
Youssef told Al-Sabah: “Unhealthy landfilling has a negative and dangerous impact on the environment, and many people collect it and then burn it, which leads to gases and smoke that pollute the environment, at a time when we lack the vegetation that contributes to purifying the atmosphere,” and he added, “ The accumulated waste, most of which consists of chemicals and industrial materials, sinks into the ground and pollutes groundwater, leading to the spread of diseases in nearby areas.”
The expert criticized “the lack of environmental and health awareness and the optimal handling of this waste,” and continued: “There is environmental education that starts from kindergarten and reaches the highest levels in many countries of the world, which invest solid waste such as plastic, metal, and food, and there are radical solutions used by countries of the world.” Transforming it from harmful to beneficial through the manufacture of peat moss, fertilizers, and animal feed.” He pointed out that “the price of a kilo of household waste reaches $11, and that European countries face a scarcity of household waste, so they import it and use it in industry and energy generation.
