The Union of People with Special Needs in Sulaymaniyah, today, Tuesday, called on the regional government not to involve their salaries in the ongoing disputes and conflicts with Baghdad. While the situation of this segment is the worst in years, dozens of free teachers and lecturers organized a demonstration in front of the Sulaymaniyah Education Building to demand payment. Their salaries are from the federal government.
Secretary of the Union of People with Special Needs in Sulaymaniyah, Saman Hussein, said during a press conference, “Today, people with special needs received their salaries for last month, which range from 100,000 to 150,000 dinars, at a time when the price of 100 dollars approached 170,000 dinars.”
He added, “The current situation for people with special needs is the worst in years, and now people with special needs have started coming to the union to ask for old clothes, and they cannot buy their share of oil to protect them from the cold of winter, and they are not able to buy meat, pay for generators, or any other need with this salary.”
Saman called on the regional government “not to involve their salaries in conflicts and disputes with Baghdad and to disburse them on time and from the region’s internal imports as they are very few compared to the salaries of any other segment.”
For their part, dozens of free teachers and lecturers demonstrated in Sulaymaniyah, in front of the governorate’s education building, while explaining that continuing the demonstrations and strike is the guarantee of obtaining rights.
The protesting teacher, Saman Taher, said during a press conference attended by Shafaq News Agency, “Our demonstrations today are to confirm our messages to government agencies that we are continuing and continuing to demand our rights through demonstrations and strikes, as they are the guarantor of obtaining our rights.”
He added, "The strike and demonstrations will continue until our demands are met, namely that our salaries be paid directly by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the start of professional bonuses and promotions, the appointment of free lecturers, and the resolution of the issue of saved salaries, in addition to ensuring that salaries are received on time."
Saman stated that they are “proceeding with any step that would guarantee their rights with free lecturers and with all government employees, through civil methods, as well as through legal methods guaranteed by the law and the constitution.”
The strike of free teachers and lecturers has continued since the start of the new academic year on the thirteenth of last September, which came against the backdrop of delaying the payment of employees’ salaries for more than a month and the delay that followed after that due to faltering negotiations with Baghdad to disburse the region’s share of the federal budget for the current year, which affected the Disbursing the salaries of the month of September and October after the regional government was able to disburse the salaries of the month of August at the beginning of this week.
