Baghdad / Obelisk Event: The Chairman of the Council of Commissioners, Judge Omar Ahmed Muhammad, received the Special Representative of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, and her accompanying delegation, on Tuesday, 12/5/2023, at the National Office in Baghdad, in the presence of the Deputy Chairman of the Council, Judge Fayyad Yassin, and the Head of the Electoral Administration, Judge Abbas Al-Fatlawi. Members of the Board of Commissioners are Judge Ali Rashid, Judge Amer Al-Husseini, and Judge Fattah Muhammad.
The President of the Council welcomed Ms. Plasschaert and the accompanying delegation, expressing his thanks for the support provided by the United Nations Mission in Iraq to the Commission as it prepares to hold the irregular governorate council elections in the region on December 18 of this year.
During the meeting, the Commission's latest logistical and technical preparations for holding the upcoming local elections were discussed.
Judge Abbas Al-Fatlawi invited Plasschaert and her accompanying delegation to attend the final experimental simulations that the Commission will conduct before polling day on December 18 to determine the readiness of the electoral machines. For her part, Ms. Plasschaert expressed the international organization's readiness to continue supporting the Commission in this electoral process and subsequent operations in support of a new democratic Iraq.
It is noteworthy that the Independent High Electoral Commission continues its meetings with local and international civil society organizations due to the technical and logistical expertise it provides that contributes to overcoming obstacles faced by its employees in the various electoral processes.
