The Supreme Water Committee came out with a number of recommendations and decisions to contribute to reducing water waste and consumption and addressing the water scarcity crises experienced by the Iraqi governorates, including setting a certain amount of water as the average consumption, and if it is exceeded, water fees will be doubled.

The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, said that the [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/3192444610/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%86%D8%A9 %D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7/ar/]Supreme Committee[/url] for Water and Land held meetings recently and took a package of decisions in this regard, the most important of which is organizing residential homes with special meters to measure the water consumed by the concerned authorities in the [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/4211859277/%D9%88%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A9 %D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%B9%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1/ar/]Ministry of Construction[/url] and Housing and public municipalities, to calculate the quantities consumed within the wage payment bills, The per capita share of water is set at 200 liters per day on average, noting that if it is increased, it will be met with double wages.

He added that the recommendations also included imposing relative irrigation fees on farmers for the purpose of investing them in maintaining irrigation projects in irrigation at a high cost, as service projects that will be implemented at the beginning of the year.

    Numerical analysis

Al-Sumaria News conducted a numerical analysis of what this recommendation means, as well as the current Iraqi per capita share of water, water pricing, and how much this decision will lead to raising the cost of water fees if the specified quota is exceeded.

Returning to setting the per capita consumption quota at 200 liters of water per day only, and if it is exceeded, double fees will be imposed, as this quantity is equivalent to only 55% of the average quantity that an Iraqi individual usually consumes, which in 2021, for example, amounted to more than 365 liters.

The highest consumption among the Iraqi governorates is in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], where the amount of water supplied per person reached more than 620 liters, while the lowest amount supplied was in [url=https://www.alsumaria.tv/Entity/133543/%D8%B0%D9%8A %D9%82%D8%A7%D8%B1/ar/]Dhi Qar[/url], where the share of water per person amounted to only 212 liters.

As for [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], the average per capita share of water per day was 470 liters, which means that the specified quantity is equivalent to only about 43% of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]’s per capita share of water per day.

How much will the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] family pay?

According to the budget law, the price of water was set at a minimum of 100 dinars per cubic meter, which means that the price of one liter is 0.1 dinars.
If the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] citizen continues to consume 470 liters of water per day, the first 200 liters will cost 600 dinars within a month, while the remaining 270 liters will cost more than one thousand and 620 dinars, which means the total amount paid by one [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] citizen for water will be two thousand and 220 dinars, while For an average family of 5 people, monthly water fees will be more than 11 thousand dinars.

But if the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] family, consisting of 5 members, adheres to the water quota of only 200 liters per day for each person, the water fees for the entire family within a month will amount to 3,000 Iraqi dinars. Accordingly, it appears that the new decision will raise the cost of water by 260% for the family. One if the individual consumes more than 200 liters per day.
