Baghdad Governorate revealed that private generator contractors in the capital adhered by up to 90% to the governorate’s instructions regarding operating hours and consumption amounts.
The Governor of Baghdad, Muhammad Jaber Al-Atta, said in an interview with the official newspaper, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that a decision was issued at the beginning of last November requiring generator contractors to install electronic meters to read operating hours and consumption quantities.

Al-Atta pointed out that the governorate directed administrative unit officials to begin collecting generator subscription amounts exclusively according to the electronic meter readings, explaining that this procedure contributes to monitoring violators of operating instructions, as the amounts are collected directly from citizens according to the readings specified in the meters.
He explained that if generator owners did not comply with these instructions, the governorate threatened to activate the issuance of judicial orders of imprisonment in cooperation with the Supreme Judicial Council, stressing that 90% compliance does not exempt violators from legal penalties.
Al-Atta stressed the importance of enhancing the culture of energy consumption among citizens, as subscriptions will be collected according to actual use, which reduces the burden on citizens in proportion to the volume of their energy consumption.
