    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Political researcher Mujasha’ Al-Tamimi accused, on Friday (August 16, 2024), the principle of political consensus in Iraq of obstructing the oversight role of parliament and promoting corruption and mismanagement.
Al-Tamimi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The adoption of the principle of consensus by the State Administration Coalition has disrupted Parliament in an important aspect, which is oversight and accountability. Consensus began, which is what prevented the questioning or hosting of government officials regarding corruption and mismanagement files, and it also disrupted the legislation of important laws."
He added that "the fifth session of Parliament will not achieve the desired goal of accountability and helping the executive authority to reduce rampant corruption."
Al-Tamimi explained that “the consensus even affected the formation of the Integrity Committee, as there are representatives from the committee who go to the media to reveal corruption files because the parliament has arranged for a consensus mechanism, and thus accountability is difficult,” indicating that “everyone is involved in the government, and thus opening any file will lead to opening a second file against the political party that demands accountability and interrogation.”
About two years ago, the formation of the State Administration Coalition was announced, which includes most of the political forces (Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish) in the country. This alliance came after a bloody internal conflict between the Shiite forces, and the three main components of Iraq participated, each with dreams, visions and a set of conditions, which were agreed upon before the announcement of the formation of the government of Muhammad Shia al-Sudani in October 2022.
