    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Transport confirmed, today, Thursday, that the current (old) railway lines will be fully rehabilitated and maintained, and new sections will be constructed, especially the lines that pass through the governorates included in the "Development Road" project.
The director of the ministry's media office, Maitham Al-Safi, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah", followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the current (old) railway lines will be fully rehabilitated and maintained, and new sections will be built, especially the lines that pass through the governorates included in the road project, which are 11 governorates," noting that "the rehabilitation and maintenance operations will be jointly financed based on the investment budget and loans."
He added that "the ministry has completed the first section of the development road, which is the road linking the entrance to the Faw port and the submerged tunnel, which is 63 km long, as it became passable after the completion of the first layer of asphalt, with a length of 51 km, which passes through the submerged tunnel and then passes through two bridges, the first of which has exceeded 96 percent completion and the second 77 percent," noting that "the ministry is working to rehabilitate and organize the internal railway network until the completion of the development road project within the specified timeframes."
Al-Safi explained that “the ministry has begun the procedures for referring the project to prepare designs and audit the complementary works for railway line projects to the Italian company after obtaining the approval of the Prime Minister for the purpose of completing the designs and quantity schedules and determining the actual costs to implement the steps of the development road project.”
On the other hand, the Ministry of Transport announced the approval of the Council of Ministers for the request of the Minister of Transport, Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, to allocate the land on which it was built (Abbas Ibn Firnas Square) near Baghdad International Airport for the benefit of the General Company for Private Transport Management, in order to begin developing the square, as part of the preparations for the Arab Summit scheduled to be held in the capital, Baghdad, next year.
