Shafaq News/ A report by the Independent Arabia newspaper on Friday counted the number of Iraqi factions loyal to Tehran present in Syria and described them as the "backbone" of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard force.
The report, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, stated that "initial information indicates that pro-Iranian groups, especially the Iraqi ones, are strengthening their capabilities, as they represent the backbone of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's striking force in the face of the American presence in Syria. The most prominent of these is the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, which numbers 7,000 fighters and cooperates with the Lebanese Hezbollah, which has been present in Damascus since 2013."
The Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas Brigade also occupies an important and advanced position, and includes an unstable number of fighters, in addition to the al-Nujaba Movement, which fought alongside the Syrian regime army in Aleppo and Damascus.
The Asaib Ahl al-Haq factions are spread across the Damascus countryside and Albukamal, in addition to the Khorasani Vanguard Brigades, which has around five thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria. Other well-known factions include the Mohammad Baqir al-Sadr Forces, the Imam Hussein Brigade, the Dhul-Fiqar Brigade, and the Truthful Promise Corps, according to the report.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that the total number of foreign forces in Syria, Iraqi, Afghan, and Pakistani, reached nearly 15,000 fighters last year, 2013, while the "Jusoor" Center and the "Informagen" Foundation for data analysis estimated the number of Iranian militia forces that participated in the Syrian war since 2012 at nearly 100,000 fighters under the banner of 70 military groups and distributed over 50 bases and nearly 500 military points.
The map of the deployment of Iranian-backed forces indicates the presence of between 28 and 30 sites in southern Syria, with a military brigade deployed to protect sensitive strategic warehouses, while the Syrian Observatory documents 55 bases in addition to 515 military points deployed in Deir Ezzor, Albukamal, and Al-Mayadeen in eastern Syria, the Homs desert and its countryside on the Syrian-Lebanese border, the Aleppo countryside, in addition to the southern Damascus countryside, Daraa, and Quneitra, in addition to the Sayyida Zeinab area and the surroundings of the capital.
The report says that eastern Syria is witnessing a dangerous escalation between US forces and pro-Iranian factions after mutual attacks via drones, which threatens the outbreak of a war whose circles are expanding, especially with the possibility of the expected Iranian attack on the assassination of the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran on July 31.
The skirmishes between the two sides of the conflict in the Syrian desert come at a time when the potential Iranian response is expected to resemble the response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1, when Tehran was content to send hundreds of guided missiles and drones without hitting sensitive targets in Tel Aviv or its surroundings.
    "Guards" Revenge
Since then, the Revolutionary Guard generals have been threatening to take revenge for the assassination of their political guest, Haniyeh, at his residence in one of the presidential resorts, while the Lebanese Hezbollah is preparing for the zero hour of the Iranian response, and is driven to participate by a desire to avenge the assassination of the Mossad, the most prominent leader in its ranks, Fouad Shukr, in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut. The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, revealed on Thursday, August 15, the death of Colonel Ahmad Reza Afshari, from the Air Force Advisory Forces, in Syria, due to his wounds as a result of an air strike carried out by the international coalition, according to the semi-official Iranian Fars News Agency.
The Iranian officer, Afshari, was likely targeted in late July or early August. Media reports did not mention where the strike took place, while the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced that eight American soldiers were injured in a drone attack on a US base.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said during a press conference on Tuesday, August 13, that three soldiers had returned to duty, while eight soldiers received treatment for brain injuries and smoke inhalation. The United States believes that the attack was carried out by Iranian-backed forces, and the Pentagon is working to identify these forces.
Reuters reported that American soldiers were slightly injured, citing an American official, while this is the largest attack and the second of its kind in the past few days. The attack on the Rmeilan base in northeastern Syria was carried out by a drone, while six members of the pro-Iranian factions were killed after being targeted by a drone in the east of the country.
    Preliminary battles
Meanwhile, circles following Iranian affairs reported that the factions fighting alongside the Iranian Revolutionary Guard have already engaged in preliminary battles against the coalition forces and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Perhaps opening a front in eastern Syria, especially in Deir ez-Zor province, especially since it is the Syrian province whose rule is shared by several forces, as Iranian influence is spread in the eastern countryside, and the areas of Albukamal and Al-Mayadeen, located on the Iraqi border, are the main stronghold of the Revolutionary Guard. Observing circles expect that if the battle expands following the Iranian response to Israel, and southern Lebanon is exposed to a war focused on military sites, Hezbollah will withdraw its groups, which will have an impact on the number of fighters and experts in eastern Syria.
    make up for the deficiency
Iranian affairs researcher Saad Al-Sharea pointed out that "Iran resorted to compensating for the shortage by bringing in fighters of several nationalities, Iranian, Afghan, and Iraqi, so as not to leave the Syrian arena empty."
