    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]Today, Friday, the Federal Integrity Commission shed light on the reality of private university education in Iraq, while confirming that 34 private universities and colleges have not paid their total revenues since 2016.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Government Communications and Media Office stated in a statement received by "Al-Eqtisad News" that "the Integrity Commission showed that 34 private universities and colleges have not paid the Ministry of Higher Education's share of total revenues since 2016, and that 46 out of 72 private colleges and universities are at the level of a college and not a university."[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "A team from the Prevention Department visited the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and relevant departments to learn about the reality of private universities and colleges."[/rtl]
[rtl]The statement indicated that "Law No. 25 of 2016 weakened the Ministry's powers of follow-up and supervision, which negatively affected its ability to monitor administrative and financial performance."[/rtl]
[rtl]The statement also noted that "the law was passed after removing and changing many important articles, which led to restricting the performance and powers of the ministry," recommending in the report "the necessity of reconsidering the issue of exempting private universities and colleges from direct deduction and income taxes, and obligating them to pay taxes to the Ministry of Finance."[/rtl]
[rtl]The authority confirmed that "the ministry did not suspend admission to 34 private universities and colleges that had not paid their share of annual revenues, despite being given a three-month grace period to pay."[/rtl]
[rtl]He recommended "taking into account the needs of the labor market when establishing private colleges and universities, forming audit committees to review new colleges, and suspending admission in the event of violations."[/rtl]
[rtl]The report also stressed the "importance of activating the role of the Scientific Supervision and Evaluation Authority through field visits, and establishing fixed work procedures for follow-up committees, calling for "obligating lecturers and employees not to work in government universities in a manner that conflicts with the laws."[/rtl]
[rtl]He explained that "there are 46 out of 72 private colleges and universities that bear the name 'University College' despite the fact that their name does not match their level," stressing "the necessity of applying quality standards in academic classification and enhancing scientific research by holding scientific conferences and publishing research in accredited international journals."[/rtl]
