    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Head of the Parliamentary Transport Committee, Representative Zahra Al-Bajari, acknowledged today, Monday (January 15, 2024), that Baghdad International Airport, the largest airport in Iraq, is dilapidated and suffering from high levels of deterioration.
Al-Bajari said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Baghdad International Airport, which is the largest airport in Iraq and its window to the world, but it is dilapidated and has disappeared at the highest levels, not to mention its size, which does not fit the reality of flights and the volume of travel demand."
She added, "Basra Airport also suffers from the same problems in terms of the dilapidation of old buildings, which requires a new map that ensures the construction of large airports that suit the nature of the conditions and that the transportation sector turns into an arena for economic competition like other countries, especially since the rate of activity in this direction is high."
She pointed out that "developing airports is part of the plan to support the Iraqi economy and create new horizons," stressing "the necessity of a comprehensive reconsideration of all Iraqi airports."
Despite its enormous oil wealth, Iraq suffers from deteriorating infrastructure and poor public services after witnessing decades-long conflicts and faces mismanagement and rampant corruption, according to observers.
Despite the great importance of the airport, which is the largest reception station in the country, it has not witnessed any important projects to rehabilitate its facilities, which were built forty years ago.
Baghdad Airport stopped operating during the 1990s, as a result of the blockade imposed on Iraq following Saddam Hussein's regime's invasion of Kuwait.
The airport consists of three stations, which quickly become crowded in the event of an influx of passengers, especially during religious ceremonies.
International coalition forces are still present in some airport facilities, which are subject to attacks from time to time.
