    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (January 30, 2024), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee expected an American military response in Iraq targeting the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces as part of the response to the bombing of “Tower 22” in Jordan, which resulted in the killing and wounding of a number of American soldiers.
Committee member Karim al-Muhammadawi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the American side always seeks to exploit any security event in the region in order to launch its aggressive operations against Iraq and the Iraqis by targeting the PMF and its leaders, in operations that violate sovereignty and threaten Iraq’s security and stability.” .
Al-Muhammadawi stated, “According to American expectations and statements, Washington intends to repeat its aggressive operations in Iraq, and it is not unlikely to target the Hashd’s headquarters or its leaders with baseless pretexts and justifications and false accusations through which America wants to find an outlet to strike the Hashd. This action, if repeated, will certainly have repercussions.” "negative impact on the overall situation in Iraq."
The US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) said yesterday, Monday, that the attack that targeted a US military base in Jordan “bears the fingerprints of the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades,” considering it an “escalation” because it led to the killing of three soldiers.
Deputy spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense, Sabrina Singh, said in a press conference that the decision to respond to the attack against American forces will be taken by the president “and he is consulting with his security team on an ongoing basis.”
On Sunday, US President Joe Biden pledged to respond after the attack, which he blamed on factions that he said were supported by Iran, in light of the increasing attacks on American forces in the region.
Yesterday, Monday, Sening held Iran responsible for the attacks “because it funds and supports groups operating in Iraq and Syria and attacking our forces.”
Singh said: “We are not seeking conflict, but we will respond to the targeting of our forces, ships and commercial vessels, and we do not want to see a regional war.”
She added: "We will not tolerate continued attacks on American forces. We will take all necessary measures to defend our forces at the front, and we will do so at a time and place of our choosing."
She pointed out that since last October 17, American forces have been subjected to 165 attacks, including 98 in Syria, 66 in Iraq, and one final attack in Jordan, adding that “our defenses have greatly succeeded in confronting the repeated attacks to which our forces have been exposed, and in most cases there have been some casualties and minor damage.”
The American official said: “We are still evaluating what happened and how the march was able to penetrate the military base” in Jordan, noting that the number of American soldiers injured in the attack had risen to more than 40 people.
She added, "We are focused on working with our Iraqi partners regarding how to respond to the attack, and we remain committed to the work of the Supreme Military Committee."
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, "The American response to the drone attack in Jordan will not affect efforts to release the Israeli hostages in Gaza."
He added that Washington "is not seeking escalation and is not looking forward to war with Iran," without confirming or denying whether the Biden administration intends to strike Iranian territory after the attack led to the death of three American soldiers.
On Thursday, Washington and Baghdad agreed to launch working groups within the framework of the “Supreme Military Committee” to study the future of the coalition in light of the “danger” posed by ISIS and the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces.
