Water levels rose relatively in the central marshes as a result of the heavy rain wave that the country witnessed during the past week.
The director of Nature Iraq, Jassim Al-Asadi, told Al-Sabah: The recent wave of rain that Iraq recently witnessed contributed to an increase in river levels and thus a relative rise in marsh levels in the central marshes.
Al-Asadi explained that the water level reached 86 cm above sea level, considering this level to be below ambition, as the marshes still need more water after several seasons of drought and decreased water revenues from the rivers that feed them.
He pointed out that the marshes receive water through the Batira Regulator via the Al-Khoms Canal at a rate of up to 40 cm per second, in addition to 80 cm flowing through the Al-Kahla River to the Al-Hawizeh Marsh, and this water will help raise water levels in the marshes, in addition to raising the level of the Euphrates connecting To the marshes, which reached 98 cm after it was 65 cm about a week ago, which is a reasonable percentage, especially if we know that this percentage decreased last summer to 28 cm. While Al-Asadi stressed that this water is not sufficient to revive the marshes and stabilize them water-wise, he expressed optimism about its increase, as the country is expected to witness another wave of rain and torrential rains, and while awaiting the season of snow melting, a significant improvement will occur in the reality of the water and marshes, which will reflect positively on life and the nature of the marshes. .
