It is not possible to ignore the natural resources of the Iraqi desert and the ability to create opportunities for investment and transform them into large areas with actual potential for production and work, whether in current or future conditions. In addition to what Iraq is witnessing now of persistent attempts to transform these areas into green oases and introduce them into... A stage of true harmony with the existing resources in the lands of the alluvial plain areas. Scientific indicators confirm beyond doubt the possibility of controlling the harsh environment in the western desert regions and benefiting from them to achieve opportunities for economic progress in the plant and animal fields despite the limited resources available there.
Here we are not talking about the known wealth in those areas that support the economy, such as sulfur and phosphate minerals and gas fields, but rather the possibility of reclaiming large areas in them and placing them in investment paths for agricultural crop production in response to the challenges facing the country in the issue of exploiting all of its available natural resources, which can be benefited from after studying their conditions and setting The necessary plans to determine its importance and then prepare a strategy to maximize the ability to benefit from it and greatly enhance the opportunities for introducing it into the national economy, as is done in other countries around the world, especially countries with widespread desert areas that are no longer out of the reach of their promising future development programs.
As a matter of objectivity and stating the facts as they deserve, it is inevitable to highlight the serious attempts made by the Ministry of Agriculture during the current period, especially with regard to preparing systematic plans to confront the harsh nature of desert areas and by addressing the problem of water scarcity by relying on groundwater sources and investing in those lands. The broad scope of achieving benefits from it and seeking to find agricultural projects to produce some crops that can be exploited and the government’s direction to support plant and animal production and strengthen the national economy with other production elements using modern irrigation techniques. The procedures that the Ministry of Agriculture is about to undertake in the Iraqi desert must be strengthened with additional support factors from the relevant authorities, especially the technical capabilities that can be provided by local governments in the governorates that overlook desert areas, in addition to the ministry’s departments specialized in them. It is necessary to mention the importance of starting with agriculture. Fodder crops and establishing projects for poultry fields and cattle stations, and then expanding them after signs of success appear by planting other strategic crops such as palm trees, olive trees, and summer and winter vegetables, so that we have integrated work programs and ongoing projects. Here, it must be said that the trend towards livestock production in areas of land that have not witnessed previous activities for grazing calves and cows would provide the national economy with additional sources of strength and support the markets with various meat products and milk derivatives to meet the local need for them. It is also necessary to return to the successful production of a crop. Yellow corn in Karbala. In previous experiments, barren lands in the western desert of the governorate were converted to grow this crop, and through field activities, modern production methods were adopted, represented by investing in vacant areas located between abandoned wheat fields and investing them in an optimal way.
