Baghdad/Al-Masala: The Iraqi political arena is witnessing escalating tension and renewed conflict over the position of Parliament Speaker. Within 48 hours, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, the former Parliament Speaker, reiterated his candidacy for the position and not to withdraw, which brings the crisis back to its starting point at the end of last year. This development reflects the continuation of the internal political conflict and highlights the challenges facing the democratic process in Iraq.
    Renewed crisis
In recent days, it has become clear that the proposed solutions to resolve the crisis over the position of Parliament Speaker over the past two months have ended without reaching an agreement, and it has become necessary for the conflicting parties to resolve the issue of candidacy within the House of Representatives, while Al-Mashhadani’s latest position confirms that he has received support from one of the leaders of the Coordination Framework, after his chances declined in recent weeks in the face of the rise of the name of MP Ziad Al-Janabi.
    Divisions within Sunni forces
The Sunni forces in Iraq witnessed a clear division into two main teams: the first led by Mohammed al-Halbousi, who claims to control the majority with 55 deputies, and the second, which includes Khamis al-Khanjar and Muthanna al-Samarrai. This division reflects the complexities of the Iraqi political scene and complicates the possibility of reaching a consensus around a single candidate.
The role of the Coordination Framework and Shiite leaders
The Coordination Framework played a pivotal role in reshuffling the political cards, as Mashhadani gained the support of Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the State of Law Coalition, who considered it an important step towards obtaining the position. But the support provided by Maliki alone is not enough, especially in light of the shifting alliances and conflicting positions among the Shiite forces.
    Changing attitudes and political tactics
Alliances within political forces are not fixed, but rather change based on interests and negotiations. For example, Maliki last week withdrew his support for Mashhadani after settlements related to the Kirkuk and Diyala governments, indicating that alliances are based on temporary strategic considerations rather than fixed principled positions.
    Future of the crisis
The current situation suggests that the crisis is likely to escalate in the absence of a clear agreement between the conflicting parties, while Al-Mashhadani’s recent tweets reflect the complexities of the situation and indicate that attempts to impose a fait accompli by presenting a new candidate have failed. With the ongoing internal conflict and changing tactics, it remains difficult to predict the outcome of matters in the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
