    Baghdad Today - Kurdistan
Hassan Abbas, a member of the Sulaymaniyah Automobile Showrooms Union, revealed today, Saturday (August 31, 2024), the reasons for the citizens’ interest in buying cars from the central and southern governorates.
Abbas said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The first reason is due to the existence of a shock test in the Kurdistan Region, where the car is subject to continuous testing, which ensures that its faults and problems are repaired before the annual renewal."
He added that "the cleanliness of the roads in the cities of the region, in addition to their cheap prices compared to those in the central and southern governorates, as well as the easy procedures for transferring in the traffic directorates in the governorates of the region, are all reasons that led to the demand for purchases from the region's exhibitions, and the arrival of citizens from Baghdad and other governorates to buy from Kurdistan exhibitions."
This demand comes even after the unification of fines between Baghdad and the region, a situation that led to a slight contraction in the car markets in Kurdistan.
Aram Fakhri al-Din, a member of the Automobile Dealers Union in Sulaymaniyah, said earlier  that “the direct coordination between the General Traffic Department in Baghdad and the Regional Traffic Department and the coordination regarding fines led to a decrease in demand for purchasing cars bearing the Regional numbers.”
He added, "Citizens of the center and south were keen to buy regional cars, as they are not subject to fines, and thus the driver can drive quickly and commit violations without them being recorded as fines."
The Baghdad Traffic Directorate revealed during the past period that there is direct coordination between the central government and the Kurdistan Region regarding the unified traffic system, indicating that the system includes collecting fines immediately from the violating vehicle in the region that bears a Baghdad number, where the driver can pay the fine in the region and vice versa.
In mid-March, Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari directed that fines registered on northern numbers in Baghdad and the provinces be referred to the Kurdistan Region Traffic Department to be fined.
Observers also attribute other reasons to the central and southern cities’ interest in buying cars from the Kurdistan Region. In short, they see it as less harmful to the safety of the streets and the strict implementation of traffic laws, and import and export operations have their own special conditions there.
