The Ministry of Trade announced the completion of preparations to open five new shopping centers in Baghdad that operate according to the hypermarket system, working to provide the best services to citizens at subsidized prices of up to 20% of the local market. The
official spokesman for the Ministry of Trade, Mohammed Hanoun, confirmed that the idea of establishing shopping centers is a strategic step aimed at enhancing competition between the private and public sectors and contributing to creating a balanced commercial environment that works to combat the phenomenon of rising prices in local markets, in addition to its contribution to traders and importers rethinking prices, due to the existence of a government-supported alternative.
He added that the centers that will open soon are the shopping center in Al-Dabash, another in Al-Rusafa, and the Imam Ali Complex in the Jamila area, which are affiliated with the General Company for Foodstuffs Trade, which has previously worked in these centers in a step to contribute to the stability of food prices. The Al-Amel and Al-Salihiya neighborhood markets will also be opened, which are part of the work of the General Company for Central Markets,
adding that the ministry's future plan is to expand the construction of shopping centers (hypermarkets) in all Iraqi governorates, and there are ongoing technical and administrative procedures to build new centers in the same way that shopping centers were built in Baghdad.
Hanoun pointed out that these centers will work to provide all the Iraqi citizen needs of food, durable goods and other needs. In addition to providing materials at subsidized prices, other materials are sold in convenient installments to important segments of society, including families of social welfare, employees, families of martyrs and those who own a key card.
He pointed out that the step taken by the ministry came after the Prime Minister's visit to the Ministry of Trade in November of last year and his call for the ministry's companies to enter into competition in providing support to citizens and contributing to the stability of local market prices. The Minister of Trade supervised many important meetings to implement the project with the participation of the Iraqi private sector, which contributed strongly to the success of the project and provided all support to it.
