    Al-Sumaria News conducted a review of the most prominent international indicators related to women, to determine their situation in Iraq, including the security index for women, as well as the percentage of women’s contribution to the workforce in Iraq relative to men.


    *Safe countries for women





    The “Women’s Safety and Security” ranking reveals that Iraq is among the ten most dangerous countries for women in the world out of 177 countries.

    According to the classification of the Institute for Women, Peace and Security, for the year 2023-2024, the top 10 safest countries for women were led by Denmark with a score of 0.932, followed by Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Iceland, Norway, Austria, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

    As for the last ten countries in the index, which are considered the worst countries in terms of security and safety for women, Afghanistan is the least safe country for women with a score of 0.286, followed by Yemen, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Burundi, Syria, Eswatini, Somalia, Iraq with 0.424 points.


    *Labour force participation rate

    : Iraq comes as the second lowest country in the rate of women’s participation in the labor force compared to men, reaching 15.4%, after Yemen, which came in first place with a rate of 8.8%.

    From 1990 until now, the highest recorded percentage of women’s participation in the labor force relative to men was 20.1%, and it was recorded in 2018, and then it declined again, reaching 15.44% in 2021, while in 2023 it also declined to 11.4%.
