Director of the American Middle East Alliance for Democracy, Tom Harb, said that the stability of Iraq is very important, but achieving this requires support from the United States.
During an interview: Harb said: If the Iraqi Prime Minister is going to discuss the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, he must also discuss the Iranian presence in the country, and discuss the future of the Popular Mobilization Forces as well.
He pointed out that the US Congress “does not want the United States to withdraw from Iraq,” considering that this will cause Iran to dominate Iraq and the Middle East.
On Saturday, April 13, 2024, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani began his visit to the American capital, Washington, in a delicate and sensitive circumstance at the level of bilateral relations and the situation in the region.
Before leaving Baghdad, Al-Sudani said in a press conference, “The goal of the visit is to move relations with the United States to a new stage, which includes activating the provisions of the Strategic Framework Agreement.”
He stressed that he will discuss with US President Joe Biden the circumstances of the region and the escalation it is witnessing, and the joint role in working to calm the situation and prevent the conflict from expanding in a way that affects stability.
He also pointed out that his visit will include “discussing the work of the Supreme Military Committee between Iraq and the international coalition, to reach a timetable for ending the coalition’s mission and moving to bilateral relations with the countries participating in the coalition.”
The Federal Prime Minister indicated that “the visit will witness meetings with the US Secretaries of State, Defense and Treasury, the National Security Advisor, the US Chamber of Commerce and senior officials in oil and industrial companies.”
