The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiyath Surji, commented on the scenes of the appearance of Turkish army convoys in the Amadiya district of Dohuk Governorate.
Sorji said, "The Turkish forces have set up major checkpoints on the Bamarti-Amadiya road," stressing that "this is a serious violation of the country's sovereignty."
Sorji added, "The silence of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government regarding this violation is very shameful," stressing "the need for a quick response, because the entry of a foreign army into the borders of another country is a disregard for its sovereignty and borders."
He pointed out that "the argument of the Kurdistan Workers' Party and its presence in those areas is incorrect," explaining that "the Workers' Party is present deep inside Turkey, and carries out operations against the Turkish army, but Ankara's goal is expansion and spread."
On June 12, 2024, a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Alawi Al-Bandawi, said, “The Turkish forces are present inside Iraqi territory at a depth of 40 km, and this is a serious and major violation of Iraqi sovereignty,” noting that “this unjustified incursion poses a threat to Iraqi national security, and therefore efforts must be made to expel those forces urgently and quickly.”
The Iraqi side confirms that there is no agreement between the Iraqi and Turkish sides on the incursion, except for the minutes of a meeting signed in 1984 and lasting for one year, which allows Turkish forces to incur only 5 kilometers inside Iraqi territory to pursue the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
In contrast, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad last April witnessed talks about a new agreement that would allow the establishment of a security belt 40 kilometers deep inside Iraq's borders, while estimates indicate that Turkish forces have penetrated 100 kilometers deep into Iraqi territory in the past few years.
