MP Yasser Iskandar confirmed, today, Saturday (June 29, 2024), that Baghdad succeeded in coordinating with 24 countries to recover their citizens and dismantle the Syrian Al-Hawl camp.
Iskandar said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Iraq is the most affected country in terms of security, with the presence of 35-45 thousand individuals belonging to approximately 60 countries, most of which are from ISIS families who embrace extremist ideology that is the most dangerous in the world in the Syrian Al-Hawl camp on the Iraqi border." ".
He added, "Baghdad has sought for three years to dismantle the Syrian Al-Hawl camp by pushing countries to open up to repatriating their nationals," indicating that "24 countries have actually begun implementing programs to repatriate their nationals in batches, and this is a positive start to reach a comprehensive dismantling of the camp and ending the threat it poses to the security environment in the Middle East as a whole."
Iskandar pointed out that "Iraq's plan to recover its citizens in Al-Hawl, Syria, is proceeding according to what was planned by the National Security Advisory, as it is the one concerned with the file in terms of management and evaluation, and we believe in its ability to prevent any violations and ensure the recovery of everyone involved in the blood of Iraqis to bring them to justice."
Last May, Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji called on countries that have nationals from ISIS families in Al-Hawl camp to withdraw their citizens, in preparation for closing the Syrian camp, which is located near the Iraqi border.

The camp is estimated to house around 50,000 people, including foreigners from nearly 60 countries, as well as displaced Syrians and Iraqi refugees, who make up more than half of the total.
