A diplomatic source revealed to the Syrian newspaper "Al-Watan" that the Arab parties participating in the Arab Contact Committee on Syria recently agreed to hold a meeting soon in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

After a postponement due to developments in the situation in Gaza, the source indicated that intensive Arab diplomatic efforts had been made recently to overcome obstacles to the committee's convening, which led to all parties agreeing to hold its second meeting soon.

He stressed that "there is Arab insistence on holding the committee and this will be very soon," stressing that there is no objection from any of the participating parties to holding the meeting, some of whom had previously requested to postpone it, citing the need for further consultations.

The first meeting of the Arab Ministerial Contact Committee on Syria was held in Cairo in mid-August.

The committee includes the foreign ministers of Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Egypt, in addition to the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. Its formation was announced on May 7, 2023.

In mid-March, preparations for holding the committee were the main topic in the discussions that brought together Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Miqdad and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

According to the statement issued after the meeting, the two ministers discussed the efforts made by Damascus to follow up on the work of the Arab Contact Committee on Syria, as well as good preparations for the next meeting of the Contact Committee, which is supposed to be held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
