Shafaq News/ The Iraqi human rights organization "Petri Corps" revealed on Monday that there are problems between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region that caused a delay in opening a mass grave containing the remains of dozens of Yazidis in Sinjar.

The head of the organization, civil activist Khairy Ali Ibrahim, told Shafaq News Agency, “A mass grave containing the remains of 67 Yazidis was delayed for nearly nine years due to overlapping powers and problems between Baghdad and Erbil regarding the method of burying the remains and examining DNA.”

He explained, "The families of the victims have not yet received any rights or entitlements, and we are approaching a decade since the discovery of the cemetery."

He pointed out that "the Kurdistan Regional Government authorities opened the cemetery when Sinjar was liberated in February 2015. It is located in the northern region between Khanasour and Sinuni."

Ibrahim pointed out that "this matter disturbed Baghdad at the time and it considered it a legal violation, as it believes that the only entity responsible for opening the graves is the Directorate for the Protection of Mass Graves in the Martyrs Foundation, which prompted the region to return the remains and bury them in an irregular manner on flat land without any grave markers."

He added, "The Forensic Medicine Department in Baghdad has not yet matched the DNA of the remains with the families of the victims."

In this context, informed sources in Sinjar revealed to Shafaq News Agency, “The Directorate for the Protection of Mass Graves was upset when it came to the cemetery site to conduct an examination on it, when it learned that the cemetery had been opened by the Kurdistan Region authorities, which complicated the situation as the Directorate left the cemetery as it was and did not It has been opened ever since.
