    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Services Committee, MP Hussein Habib, responded today, Sunday (June 30, 2024), to the controversy over the dominance of foreign companies over projects in Iraq, while describing the companies of the Ministry of Construction and Housing as "dead."
Habib said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “referring projects to foreign companies does not represent any legal violation, but according to the data, the vast majority of projects were referred to Iraqi companies,” pointing out that the measure here is sobriety and efficiency in implementing projects and successful experiences, and in Baghdad they were not referred. There are only projects to remove bottlenecks for foreign companies, and there are local private companies working in the same locations.”
He added, "I personally support giving all projects to Iraqi companies for several reasons, including employing workers and giving them the opportunity to be empowered for more experience and solidity, but there is no harm in resorting to foreign companies to implement projects in Baghdad, the south, the center and the rest of the regions."
Habib pointed out that “the Ministry of Housing represents well-known companies, including Hammurabi, Assyria and others, but they are dead companies and most of them are losing companies, but they are now moving towards changing their course and implementing projects within the government effort,” pointing out that inoculating foreign companies with Iraqi companies enhances their experience and pushes them to take their position in all projects. With the passage of time".
The Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee confirmed on Tuesday (April 23, 2024) that Iraq will be, during the next stage, an arena for foreign companies to compete for various investments, while an economic expert refutes this belief.
Committee member Mohammed Al-Ziyadi told Baghdad Today, "Iraq has many large investment opportunities in various sectors and in various Iraqi governorates, especially the industrial and agricultural sectors and the field of diverse energy, and Al-Sudani's recent visit to Washington will open the door significantly for the work of these companies."
Al-Ziyadi explained that “the Iraqi investment arena is not limited to a specific company, but is open to the work of all foreign and Arab companies, and in the next stage, Iraq will be an arena for foreign companies to compete for various investments, and this will certainly have great economic benefits for Iraq, and the development of sectors, and perhaps there will be a joint opportunity between foreign and governmental sectors or foreign and Iraqi civil sectors.”
In the same context, economic expert Nabil Al-Marsoumi refutes the common belief that Iraq has become an attractive investment environment, and that there are dozens of American companies that want to invest in Iraq and that there are 4000 billion dollars waiting to enter Iraq to invest in it.
He said: “Such proposals lack scientific, professionalism and professionalism because investment in Iraq is still high risk for individuals and money, especially with the spread of weapons and the lack of a rational state to whose authorities everyone is subject, in addition to the high level of corruption, bureaucracy, red tape, and the backwardness of the banking system and infrastructure, especially electricity.” ".
He added, "It is well known that investment is related to expectations, and investors cannot make long-term predictions in a turbulent environment, especially since the global foreign capital available for investment is scarce and is competed for by various countries that are trying to provide packages of advantages to it, including granting investment licenses in just one day, while it takes several months in Iraq. These reasons are what explain the existence of about 100 billion dollars invested by Iraqi businessmen in many countries, most notably Jordan, the Emirates, and Turkey."
