The Ministry of Planning revealed that it has taken a series of measures to reduce poverty and unemployment rates in Iraq, indicating that government policies have led to a decline in poverty rates to 21.5% according to a survey conducted in the second half of this year. While it expected that unemployment rates would decline due to the provision of thousands of job opportunities in the public and private sectors, it confirmed that the five-year plan will soon be launched after its approval by the Council of Ministers, which will address various development and service sectors, especially health, education, housing and raising income levels.
The ministerial program of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's government adopts a realistic plan that can be implemented by ministries and independent bodies, which includes reforming the economic, financial and service sectors, addressing poverty and unemployment, combating corruption and stopping the waste of public money, while al-Sudani confirmed earlier that "the root of the problem in Iraq is economic, and it has social consequences that have led to manifestations of unemployment, poverty and poor services."
In the midst of this, the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq called on the government to work seriously to reduce poverty and unemployment rates by developing a strategic plan for the next five years.
The center’s vice president, lawyer Hazem Al-Radini, stressed in a press statement yesterday received by “Al-Sabah” the necessity of moving “to support national industry and agriculture, reduce crop imports, activate the industrial sector, and monitor foreign labor that has invaded the Iraqi market and reduced job opportunities after they approached one million workers.”
In an effort to reduce poverty and unemployment rates, the Ministry of Planning revealed, according to its spokesperson, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, that it has taken a series of measures to provide job opportunities and increase development rates.
Al-Hindawi told Al-Sabah: “The poverty indicators in Iraq have reached 21.5%, and now the economic and social survey of the family in Iraq is being conducted, as this survey began in the second half of this year, and the initial indicators of the survey showed a decline in poverty rates compared to what was recorded in previous years,” stressing that “this decline came as a result of the government policies adopted during the past two years, especially with regard to food aspects and securing the items of the ration card, in addition to increasing the coverage of the social protection program for more than two million families.”
Al-Hindawi pointed out that other government policies that contributed to reducing poverty were represented in implementing a group of projects that provided many job opportunities and services and improved the level of income, as all of these moves contributed to reducing poverty rates in Iraq.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Planning also explained that the unemployment rate in the country, according to the latest survey conducted at the beginning of 2022, reached 16.5%, expecting that rate to decline as a result of providing thousands of job opportunities during the past two years, stressing that the ministry, with the aim of reducing poverty rates, is preparing to launch the five-year plan after its approval by the Council of Ministers, indicating that this plan addresses various development sectors and has given a large space to the reality of services, especially health, education, housing and raising the level of income, in addition to the ministry working diligently to prepare the third anti-poverty strategy for the next five years, which includes a set of measures and policies aimed at empowering the poor in various fields.
Al-Hindawi pointed out that among the plans aimed at improving the level of income and reducing poverty, work is still underway on the Social Fund for Development projects that aim to improve the level of services in the poorest villages, which number approximately 570 villages, as the projects include building schools and health centers, extending water and electricity lines, and paving roads.
