The Women, Family and Childhood Committee in the House of Representatives announced today, Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the addition of paragraphs on begging and electronic blackmail to the draft Child Protection Law before its enactment.
The head of the committee, Dunya Al-Shammari, said in a statement received by Mawazine News, that "the draft law is sensitive and must be given great attention," noting that "it differs from other laws in terms of scrutinizing every paragraph and word in it, so that it is not misunderstood or becomes a loophole that can be used to commit violations."
Al-Shammari added that "the law protects the family in general and the child in particular, and is the basis for building society, and therefore it must be given attention," calling for "putting paragraphs in the Child Protection Law that are of great importance and constructive at the same time, as is the case with the solid paragraphs in the laws granting citizenship or health rights, compulsory education and other laws in force before and after 2003."
The head of the committee explained that "there is a new situation that emerged after 2003, and today we are living the technological development that has invaded the world and Iraq in particular, which requires the creation of paragraphs that address the problems of begging and forcing children to do so at intersections and residential areas, in addition to the electronic blackmail that society suffers from."
