    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Joint Operations revealed, on Monday (July 15, 2024), the contents of Iraq's border security plan with 3 neighboring countries, indicating that different strategies were followed towards the borders with Syria, Turkey and Iran.
The spokesman for the joint operations, Major General Tahseen Al-Khafaji, said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", that "one of the most important factors for the success of military operations and combating terrorism and crime is controlling the borders," noting that "there is a strategy by the Border Forces Command in coordination with the joint and internal operations in order to tighten control over the border paths with all their complexities with neighboring countries."
He added, "Work on the Syrian border is taking place along multiple tracks. The largest part has been secured and 80% of infiltration operations have been stopped through the security barrier, the installation of towers, cameras and security deployment. In addition, the border with Turkey has also received double support in strengthening the headquarters, towers and deployment, and there is cooperation from Ankara."
He pointed out that "even the borders with Iran are witnessing intensive work to secure them, and there are efforts being made to complete the Huwaiza Marsh Dam to prevent any infiltration operations," noting that "all neighboring countries support Baghdad in the file of securing the common borders."
Since last March, Iraq has begun implementing a plan to erect the “largest barbed wire barrier with Iran,” days after announcing that the border with the Syrian side would be almost completely secured with concrete barriers.
At the beginning of this year, Iraq opened a 160-kilometre-long concrete wall with Syria, out of more than 600 kilometres of the border strip that Iraq shares with Syria.
Iraq's focus on securing its borders with Syria and Iran, while it shares borders with five countries, reflects the extent of the risks associated with the borders between these two countries with Iraq. Iraq avoids the risks of terrorist organizations with Syria, as well as drug smuggling. It also aims to secure its borders with Iran to prevent infiltration and drug smuggling. Iraq also has security problems on its borders with Turkey, which also culminated in a joint security agreement to eliminate the Kurdistan Workers' Party, while the danger seems absent on the borders with Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
