Economic researcher, Duraid Al-Shaker Al-Anzi, explained that the ongoing pollution in the environment of Basra Governorate, which was caused by the burning of gas accompanying the oil extraction process, was due to colonialism, which exploited poor planning in Iraq.
Al-Anzi stressed that “the poor production mechanism, incorrect use of gas and its burning in the Iraqi atmosphere resulted from many long-term accumulations.” He pointed out that “there is a saturation of emissions in the climate of the region surrounding the country, as pollution includes many countries in the world and not just in Basra.”
Al-Anzi added, “The imperialist countries have exploited the mechanism of oil extraction in a hideous way to create a new colonial atmosphere by changing the mechanism of colonialism. They are the most capable of changing it because they possess the technology to make it suitable for their ideas that call for treating climate pollution. Therefore, they enter the world with this slogan for all poorly planned countries like Iraq, as they search for new fields despite the fact that these fields pollute the region day and night.”
He pointed out that “what can be offered to Basra is the establishment of factories to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which is the main cause of pollution and affects the environment and vegetation, as it has destroyed tens of millions of palm trees and trees in the country.” He indicated that “the cost of these factories or plants does not exceed 15 million dollars, and within a year or two, Basra’s atmosphere will be outside the international standard for being affected by the gas.”
“On the other hand, we can use the gas in the global carbon trade, which now stands at $80 trillion due to the increasing demand for it, as the manufacture of carbon in the form of ice granules can be used in the rainmaking process, in addition to adding billions of cubic meters of water, while it is used to compress and cool the gas to a certain degree, and inject it into oil wells instead of injecting water,” he added, noting that “with every oil well there is a water well used to balance oil production after the gas pressure drops with the aging of the wells, and this causes great harm to the groundwater in Basra.”
The economic researcher concluded, "The bombs dropped by the invading forces are internationally prohibited and it is difficult to get rid of their effects quickly, but rather through gradual and costly treatments."
It is noteworthy that the Iraqi government allocated $200 million in the 2023 budget to purchase cancer drugs, and also allocated about $250 million to cover some requirements through governing expenses. These amounts are insufficient and do not rise to the level of people’s suffering and needs in light of the increasing number of infections due to pollution.
