The Equestrian Club, which has entered its 104th year since its establishment as the oldest equestrian and horse racing club in Iraq in 1920 and was transformed into an organized club in 1922, is experiencing an existential threat by stripping it of its unique status and stripping the people of Baghdad of one of the few recreational spaces in Baghdad, essentially, by transforming it into a new space of concrete blocks in the form of an investment residential complex, which the government has always emphasized is a philosophy that has “proven to fail.”

Members of the Equestrian Club located in the Amiriya area west of Baghdad are preparing to hold a protest at the club, in protest against "suspicious" attempts to seize the Equestrian Club's land and turn it into a residential complex.

Observers believe that the seizure of the Equestrian Club's land is a premeditated process, like the Al-Zawraa Park, which is also under consideration, despite the repeated denials by the concerned authorities regarding the conversion of the park into an investment and the construction of residential complexes. Observers believe that presenting this information from time to time aims to test the pulse of the street and measure the extent of citizens' rejection and acceptance of this step.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Investment Committee, Susan Mansour, said in an interview with Sumaria News that the ongoing destruction taking place in Baghdad is a process of burying the deceased and driving nails into her coffin. The last nail in Baghdad's coffin is converting the Equestrian Club into an investment and turning it into a residential complex.

Mansour considered the Equestrian Club to be a landmark of the capital, Baghdad, and tampering with it comes in the context of all the attempts and hands that have extended to the green spaces and cultural and heritage landmarks of Baghdad, turning them into lands devoid of green spaces, noting that "if this was intentional to destroy the country's history, then it is a disaster, and if it was an arbitrary act as a result of negligence and lack of thought, then the excuse is worse than the sin."

For his part, the Deputy Chairman of the Economy, Industry and Trade Committee, Yasser Al-Hussaini, believes in an interview with Sumaria News that the residential complex projects in Baghdad are devoid of planning and will turn into a suffocating traffic congestion center in the future.

He explained that "all residential complex projects in the center of the capital, Baghdad, are far from the basic design and encroach on vital facilities, which will make it a center for traffic congestion in Iraq and harm the beauty of the city due to the lack of real studies and a clear vision for the architectural map of Baghdad."

He explained that "this has made party investors expand on important lands that constitute an outlet for the Baghdadi citizen and preserve the identity of Baghdad, such as the lands of the Ministry of Industry and the Equestrian Club, not to mention agricultural lands and others, as these projects are the most profitable and are not without fronts for money laundering for corruption gangs."

He considered that "the coincidence of these investments on open lands with the government's plan to resolve the bottlenecks that speed up the arrival of vehicles to the city center, and the lack of solutions to the issue of resolving bottlenecks will make traffic in Baghdad impossible after two years."

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] investment is more profitable than complexes.. But!

In turn, economic expert Mustafa Hantoush believes that the trend of investment agencies or concerned parties in general to convert all recreational spaces into residential complexes reflects a clear investment failure, as the profits from interest in entertainment may exceed the profits of investment in housing.

Hantoush told Sumaria News that Al-Zawraa Park and the Equestrian Club are clubs and parks affiliated with governmental or private administrations, and the lack of a marketing policy for these entities has caused the failure and disappearance of some of these spaces.

He explained that “these green spaces are recreational tourism and there is a great demand for entertainment in Iraq and parks, just as there is a demand for housing, but it needs a marketing policy as there is a chronic failure in marketing these green spaces,” considering that “the Baghdad Municipality and the boards of directors responsible for the recreational areas have failed miserably in marketing them. Instead of granting parts of their areas for residential investment to achieve profits, they should achieve imaginary profits from the recreational projects themselves. The capital is crowded with 8 million people and needs recreational projects and spaces that will achieve much greater profits than residential investment.”
