Baghdad/Al-Masala: In light of the increasing security challenges, Iraq finds itself forced to maintain strong relations with the United States of America, given its heavy reliance on American weapons, which constitute 70% of its armament.
Since the 2003 invasion, Iraq's military capabilities have been destroyed, prompting massive deals with Washington.
The experiences of the past years, especially the collapse of the Iraqi forces in the face of ISIS, highlighted the need for international support, which makes the relationship with the United States necessary to ensure the stability and security of the country, according to security experts, while the current government faces multiple challenges, as it seeks to achieve a delicate balance between Washington’s support and pressures towards a complete American withdrawal from Iraq.
Today, Iraq faces major security challenges, including the possibility of maintaining a strong relationship with the United States of America, or abandoning it, especially in light of the fact that 70% of its armament depends on American weapons.
Since the US invasion in 2003, Iraq's military capabilities have deteriorated, prompting successive governments to conclude huge arms deals with Washington to rebuild the army.
Despite calls to expel US forces, experts warn of the repercussions of this decision, pointing out that Iraq still needs US support, whether in the field of armament, training or maintenance. Abandoning this support could expose the country to serious security shocks, especially in light of regional threats and border instability.
The “Strategic Framework” agreement signed with the United States in 2008, which led to the withdrawal of American forces in 2011, left Iraq facing growing internal unrest.
The experience of 2014, when Iraqi forces collapsed in the face of ISIS, demonstrated Iraq’s urgent need for international support, especially from the United States, according to security experts.
The international coalition, led by Washington, was decisive in liberating Iraqi cities from the grip of the organization, in addition to the sacrifices of the Iraqi army, the Popular Mobilization Forces, and other security forces.
Despite repeated rocket attacks on military bases housing coalition forces, the Iraqi government, led by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, remains in a delicate position; it seeks to maintain a balanced relationship with Washington, while facing internal pressures. In this context, the government’s attempts to maintain these balanced relations appear to be of paramount importance to ensuring Iraq’s stability and security in the future.
