Environmentalist explains the shortcomings in the waste recycling file and confirms: The solution lies in the private sector

Environmental researcher Samir Abboud pointed out the shortcomings in the waste recycling file in Iraq, while stressing that addressing the phenomenon of waste proliferation and random handling is linked to the private sector.
Aboud said, “Waste treatment in Iraq is a mess, it is not collected or treated according to scientific, administrative and organizational controls.” He pointed out that “the statistics circulated about the volume of waste that Iraq produces daily, which amounts to 23 million tons per day, is an inaccurate number due to the lack of real standards by the departments concerned with the issue.”
Aboud added that “sanitary landfill sites are random sites that lack the most basic requirements for waste treatment and landfill work.” He noted that “the culture of waste sorting does not exist at all individual, societal and official levels.”
He stressed that “the issue of waste treatment and recycling is linked to the private sector, as opening the way for the private sector to enter this field according to strict controls is the ideal solution to eliminate the phenomenon of waste proliferation and random handling, and to limit the environmental and health risks resulting from that, in addition to the fact that this will represent an important economic source that contributes to the solidity of the national economy.”
Countries have begun to resort to recycling waste in light of the successive industrial and technological development, but in Iraq, reliance is still on traditional methods to dispose of it only without benefiting from it, despite the fact that Iraq is the country most exposed to the risk of environmental pollution due to the waste resulting from wars and the waste spread in city centers, districts, sub-districts, and even in villages and rural areas.
