The Iraqi Ministry of Trade announced the imminent opening of three central markets in Baghdad, which are set to provide 5,000 job opportunities in each market.
Zahra Al-Kilani, Director General of the Central Markets Company at the Ministry of Commerce, said, “All construction, electrical and mechanical works in the three central markets are nearing completion.”
The markets are “Al-Salihiya, Al-Amel, and Al-Shaab,” and Al-Kilani indicated that they are waiting for the arrival of the goods that will be displayed in these markets.
She explained that “each of these markets will create about 5,000 job opportunities, including workers, administrators, accountants, and others.”
In this regard, she pointed out that their company has signed contracts with specialized companies to help accomplish the matter.
Al-Kilani mentioned the work to renovate and restore the central markets in the governorates of Nineveh, Kirkuk, Najaf, Diwaniyah, Maysan and Basra.
Regarding the importance of these central markets for citizens, she explained that “the prices of goods in these markets will be set by the ministry, while there will be direct government monitoring of the prices in them.”
There are 19 central markets in Iraq, all of which have been closed since 2003, according to statistics from the Iraqi Ministry of Trade.
Economic expert, Manar Al-Abidi, said, “The push-and-pull procedures regarding ownership of these properties between various government agencies and the inability to invest in them were the main reason for not investing in these important commercial centers for a long time.”
He added, "After a long period, a contract was signed in 2019 with Dayco, also known as the Emirati Damac Company, to invest in five sites on the basis of completely demolishing those centers and building other commercial centers in their place."
Al-Ubaidi wondered “about the real reasons that led to the agreement to demolish these centers, given that the centers are modern and built with good methods, and only need rehabilitation,” explaining that “the company delayed in completing the investment for reasons it attributed to the weak response from the Baghdad Municipality at that time.”
The Ministry of Trade expects that these central markets will contribute to improving supply and demand levels and enhancing economic activity in Baghdad.
It will also provide new job opportunities, which will help reduce unemployment rates and support Iraqi families. On the other hand, these markets will enable citizens to access a variety of products at reasonable prices, which will enhance the standard of living.
After completing the opening of the central markets in Baghdad, the Ministry intends to move to implement similar projects in other governorates. This expansion aims to enhance the commercial infrastructure at the level of Iraq, which contributes to achieving sustainable economic development.
