As part of the efforts made to reduce the spread of desertification and reduce the effects of dust storms, the Ministry of Agriculture announced its efforts to plant ten million tree and palm seedlings, after successfully planting six million of them during one year of the afforestation campaign launched by the Prime Minister.
According to the United Nations, the world loses 691 square kilometers of agricultural land every year as a result of the worsening problem of desertification, while 100 countries in the world are affected by desertification by forcing the inhabitants of agricultural lands to leave their lands and take refuge in cities, and statistics estimate their numbers at one billion people, i.e. one sixth of the world’s population.
The administrative undersecretary of the ministry, Dr. Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, told Al-Sabah: “His ministry, with its tireless efforts, succeeded in exceeding the number and duration specified for the campaign launched by the Prime Minister in March of last year, which aims to plant five million tree seedlings and palm saplings within three years. In one year, it was able to plant more than six million seedlings and saplings, which were prepared by the Horticulture, Forestry and Desertification Departments for free.” He stressed his ministry’s determination to continue the campaign until it reaches a number exceeding ten million tree seedlings and saplings, indicating that all municipal departments in Baghdad and the governorates have begun their launch since last year by planting highways linking the governorates, schools, universities, roads, bridges, and defense.

Al-Jubouri added that his ministry is waiting for the implementation of the agreement concluded between Iraq and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Kuwait, to launch a campaign to plant a green belt around the central and southern regions of Iraq, with the support of international organizations, with the aim of combating desertification in Iraq, by planting 100 million trees, which he confirmed will have a major and strategic impact on the country's climate.
In the same context, he explained that a higher committee was formed headed by the technical undersecretary of his ministry, with the participation of the undersecretaries of the ministries of: Higher Education, Environment and Water Resources, Health, Construction and Housing, in addition to the Advisory Board and the Prime Minister's Office, noting that the municipal departments were instructed to water the seedlings planted within the campaign, which are palm trees, olives, willows, eucalyptus and citrus fruits, using drip systems and fixed sprinklers for their sustainability.
Over the past years, Iraq has been exposed to a desertification problem that has affected more than 90 percent of its area, to varying degrees, through wrong human practices that have contributed to the deterioration of the vegetation cover of natural pastures, in addition to the unplanned exploitation of water resources and the resulting flooding of the soil, in addition to marginal agriculture in lands with uncertain rainfall, and overgrazing, which has led to the formation of moving sand dunes and their appearance in areas that did not exist before.
