Baghdad/Al-Masala: After the disclosure of a wiretapping network on phone calls belonging to the Iraqi Prime Minister’s office earlier this month, arrest warrants have now been issued for senior officials in the government office, according to the American newspaper The New Region.
Al-Masala publishes the text of the newspaper’s report, which does not necessarily express its point of view:
Arrest warrants have been issued for senior officials in the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for their involvement in running a wiretapping network uncovered inside the government palace in Baghdad last week, Iraqi officials familiar with the investigation told The New Region.
The most prominent people against whom arrest warrants have been issued are the military secretary, the director of al-Sudani's office, and the director of the office of the head of the intelligence service run by al-Sudani.
Iraqi authorities announced last week that they had uncovered a “wiretapping and blackmail” network operating inside the government palace where al-Sudani conducts his daily work. Its activities targeted senior political leaders, members of parliament, senior officials, judges and businessmen, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
Seven suspects have been arrested so far, most notably the assistant director of administration in the prime minister's office.
The revelation of the wiretapping network inside the Prime Minister's office is the biggest scandal to hit Al-Sudani since he took office in October 2022.
If it is proven that Al-Sudani is directly involved in the activities of this network, this could cost him his position as Prime Minister and end his future political ambitions.
The new arrest warrants were issued by the investigating judge of the criminal court, Ali Jaafar al-Jift, based on information provided by the arrested suspects indicating their involvement in running the network, which consists of three officers from the National Security Service, two officers from the Intelligence Service and two employees from al-Sudani’s office, one of whom is familiar with the matter, according to informed Iraqi officials.
Information extracted from the arrested suspects indicates that the network was run with the knowledge, approval and direction of Al-Sudani, and that more than 30 voice prints of Al-Sudani and hundreds of messages exchanged between Al-Sudani and Juhi were found on the latter’s phone, according to the sources.
A senior official said, “Information indicates that the network was operating with the knowledge and approval of Al-Sudani personally, and was managed by senior employees in his private office.”
“We found hundreds of conversations on one of their phones directly linking Sudani to the network’s operations and the employees and officers who run it,” he said.
Another senior official in Al-Sudani’s office said that the network was formed during the government of the former prime minister, but Al-Sudani, at the suggestion of one of the people, “developed his work” and created a special department linked to the administrative department to follow up on the work of the representatives, “but Al-Sudani took the matter to an extreme.”
Arrest warrants have been issued, but their implementation requires the approval of the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faeq Zidane.
Tensions have reached their highest levels in months as each side seeks to dominate the Iraqi political scene.
Although Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the Hikma Movement and one of the most prominent leaders of the ruling Coordination Framework, is leading efforts to reduce tensions in an attempt to cancel or postpone the arrest warrants, other leaders have not yet met to discuss the issue pending the results of the investigation.
“The final word will be with the judiciary, and if the judiciary proves that Al-Sudani was directly involved, then this is a scandal, and he will have to deal with the consequences and think about his options,” said one Shiite leader.
The source added that if it is proven that this network is operating without the knowledge and approval of Al-Sudani, this would also be considered a major breach and its repercussions would be discussed within the framework of coordination.
He added, "Whatever the outcome, what happened constitutes a strong blow to the Shiite forces because they are the ones who brought Al-Sudani," noting that "the judiciary's decision will determine the next step for the leaders of the Coordination Framework."
