Iraq, which is watching with concern the devastating campaigns launched by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon, is working to avoid being drawn into the escalating regional conflict, with armed groups carrying out attacks on Israel from its territory, sources said.
Two decades after the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Iraq is relatively stable, with rising oil revenues funding a programme of improved services that has turned large parts of the country into construction sites.
Iraq does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's government fears that regional conflicts could affect its delicate balance between Washington and Tehran, with which Iraq is allied.
Axios reported late Thursday, citing two unnamed Israeli sources, that Israeli intelligence believes that Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi territory in the coming days, perhaps before the US presidential elections scheduled for November 5.
There has been no comment from Iraq yet.
The widening regional conflict has already led to months of tit-for-tat attacks between armed groups and US forces stationed in Iraq and the region, attacks that only abated after Iran intervened in February.
Sources in the armed groups and two government advisers said that the efforts of Al-Sudani's government are to convince the Islamic Resistance in Iraq to stop launching missiles and drones at Israel.
Baghdad has turned to Washington, asking US officials to intervene with Israel to prevent its response to the attacks, one of which killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded more than 20 others on October 4, according to Reuters.
“Washington was understanding of the consequences of any Israeli strike in Iraq and pledged to help,” an Iraqi Foreign Ministry official said.
A spokesman for the US embassy in Baghdad did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Four sources in the armed groups said that the Hezbollah Brigades and the Al-Nujaba Movement, which have vowed to continue their attacks as long as Israel continues its operations in Gaza and Lebanon.
The issue has divided the ruling coalition parties, all of whom sympathise with the Palestinian cause and consider Israel an enemy, but some disagree over how far Iraq should go in the regional confrontation.
Shiite MP Ahmed al-Kinani from the ruling coalition said Shiite leaders discussed the risks of the repercussions of the attacks on Israel and the possible Israeli response in two meetings held in October, according to Reuters.
