Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iran has officially nominated the former Oil Minister Gholam-Reza Nozari for the post of the secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries “OPEC”.
Iraq has also nominated the former oil minister in 2004-2005, Thamer Ghadhban, who currently serves as chief adviser to the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and Iraq expected Iran’s support for Ghadhban’s candidacy.
In addition to the candidates of Iran and Iraq, the Saudi Arabia and Ecuador have also submitted candidates for the highest executive position in OPEC, currently being handled by the Libyan, Abdullah al-Badri, whose mandate expires at the end of 2013.
It is scheduled to elect one of the four candidates in the meeting of oil ministers of states members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries on next June 14 in Vienna.
The Iranian Mehr News Agency quoted energy experts, as saying that “Iran and Iraq are seeking to consolidate their positions in order to prevent the election of the Saudi candidate, Majid Munif, or the candidate of Ecuador, Wilson Pastor, for the position of Secretary General of the Organization. / End/
