Buffalo Bills: Things we know this week

I know Groundhogs day is not for a couple of months and you ask yourself…”Self, why is groundhogs day being stigmatized in that very Buffalo Bills weekly editorial that brings us the likes of one ‘Negative Stanley’ as well as multiple other topics ostensible to the breaking stories that particular week.
The actual day on the calendar was not my focus, but the iconic Bill Murray movie was where my dome insides were at. By some extremely rare rock, on this third rock from the sun, that you may have been residing under for the past several decades, the character keeps waking up in this little town to the same exact events daily, somewhat stuck in time once he would close his eyes for some slumber at the end of each day.
That is how I view any of the past 17-seasons of the Buffalo Bills except a small handful where they actually were at the bottom of the league. For the most part the Bills have spent the past couple of decades competitive enough early on, but when the fat lady sings the Bills are home watching wild card football on the couch. That result has landed them very few top draft selections and directly in the middle of mediocrity.
I feel that it is groundhog’s day because so many times when the players, coaches or GM are asked about the playoffs slipping away, they get all defensive pointing out that the team is focused on one thing and that is the team they are playing that week needing to be a win, as they are focused on that wild card positioning.
So at this place in time annually, they are mathematically not eliminated and use that with a sense of attitude to avoid answering the actual questioned directed at them. This has happened with Wade Phillips, Greg Williams, Mike Malarkey, Dick Jerron, Chan Gaily, Doug Marrone, Rex Ryan, Rob Johnson, JP Losman, Drew Bledsoe, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tyrod Taylor.  At times it gets rather uncomfortable as it did with Tyrod Taylor this week as he ended the interview premature.
The main problem I find with handling in that fashion is that to this point of time…the very next week The Bills are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention and have to dive into those difficult conversations anyways.
Again and Again and Again, Groundhogs Day. I am fairly certain I have heard the following before……

Things We Know About the Buffalo Bills This Week
Tyrod Taylor made it quite clear to the media that the Bills still have a realistic chance at obtaining their goal of making the playoffs. That was his reasoning for not wanting to discuss the future of his contract and if the Bills will pick up the option. Beating Pittsburgh in itself is a huge challenge. If somehow they pull that one off, they would still need to win out.
Tyrod will be getting Watkins and Woods back at the wide receiver position which will be the first time he has those two weapons on the field at the same time since very early on in the season and it was short lived. Goodwin is healthy so if an opportunity for a 300 plus yard passing game was a possibility, this week may be the week the weapons are at Taylor’s disposal.
Charles Clay should be available as well at tight end. Shady McCoy and the rest of the running crew are expected to play. They will miss Eric Woods at center, but for the most part, if Tyrod plans on beating Pittsburgh, this is the week weapons on offense are available. I believe I mentioned last week that it was the most important game of the season. I also mentioned that after that game, this week’s game is the most important game of the season. I will go out on a limb here and say this week’s game is the most important biggest game of Tyrod’s career.
Shaq Lawson will be starting this week which from what I have seen, he has earned. It sounds like Rex Ryan feels the same way. This guy can play ball. Too bad he had to miss half of the season because he is slowly going to become a game changer.
Arthur Moats — the Bills 2010 sixth round draft pick linebacker — who many give credit on a huge hit contributing to the final retirement of the great Brett Favre, is coming to town with his current team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was always an energetic player both on and off the field in his time in Orchard Park.

Rex Ryan is convinced that the Bills are still absolutely in the playoff hunt. Step one: Win the rest of the games. He made that task sound simple by moving right onto step two which is needing some help in the AFC. Remember the days when the Bills were already clinching a spot by now or talking about resting certain players? That really feels like a lifetime ago.
Expensive tight end Charles Clay has been a non factor with only 36-catches and zero scores and only 323-yards in total. Those are not numbers of a player who was aggressively signed from Miami and expected to have Pro Bowl results which he failed to produce last season as well.
Unless we see a drastic change in the last four games, I can see him being asked nicely to go play for a different team next year. The Bills have gotten much better results in the past from inexpensive no name tight ends like ‘Chris Chandler. They went out and spent the big bucks on Clay looking for that stud tight end which they have not had since the K-Gun days.

No complaints here about 28-year-old LeSean McCoy, whose speed and shiftiness have carried Shady to 949 rushing yards — sixth in the league — a mere 56-yards out of third place and 1,185 yards from scrimmage which is seventh in the NFL. He’s also scored 10-touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. That gives him 62 points which currently is ninth-best in the league. Not too shabby.
