Canucks Game Day: Vancouver vs. Winnipeg II

Ryan Miller gets the start and the coach isn’t really sure why
The Canucks team-described No. 1 goalie is back.
So, Jacob Markstrom plays great Tuesday. He looks like he has a bead on the Winnipeg Jets most dangerous shooters, including Patrick Laine. The Canucks win 4-1. Markstrom has to play either tonight, or tomorrow, to split back-to-back games.
And the coach decides to start Miller tonight, against the team Markstrom just played, knows well and beat.
It is a curious decision which the head coach struggled to explain, saying only that both his goalies are playing well. If they are, why not let Markstrom see if he can get a little rhythm going with straight starts?

There was plenty of “bulldog” talk in the Canucks locker room today with Biega coming off his best game this season. Some have suggested that Biega was everything Erik Gudbranson is supposed to be in Tuesday’s 4-1.

The guy was unrelenting in the corners and spent a lot of time laying the body on that big-ish Jets team. Chris Tanev said if you’ve ever seen “Bulldog” in the gym, you wouldn’t be surprised. Seems, he is strong, really strong.
Sven Baertschi was unfazed by his healthy scratch
Baertschi was six points in the four games since he was a healthy scratch. The over-riding narrative is that Willie Desjardins scratched him after a loss in Florida, and Baertschi got fired up and the team is reaping the benefits.
Thing is, Baertschi was not worked up at all. He said he just unemotional and just chilled when he got the news he wouldn’t be playing.
“I’ve been through way worse,” he said. He did have six points in the eight games leading up to the scratch.

The Canucks power play continues to struggle
The Jets have spent the past couple of weeks getting gutted by power play goals against. They had been killing fewer than 50% of the power plays heading into Tuesdays’ game against the Canucks. Vancouver had three power plays in that one and managed just one shot on net.
Desjardins is loath to make significant changes on any of his lines or his power plays. Call it stubbornness or patience, but the coach’s reluctance to get creative remains confusing.

Derek Dorsett gives a lot more detail about his surgery
A positive — and spirited — Dorsett met with the media Thursday following surgery to repair a cervical spinal stenosis issue.
Dorsett said imaging had revealed he had stenosis in his neck in years past, but it wasn’t something which needed surgery. That changed with a Brayden McNabb hit in October. The injury worsened while Dorsett tried to got the rehab route instead of surgery.

When he played his final game on Nov. 17, he suffered his fourth stinger in less than a month, which helped him decide surgery would be the best option. Dorsett is trying to get back 100% for the start of next season.
