Oilers' Tyler Pitlick done for season with torn ACL

Some injuries gut a team, like when the Edmonton Oilers lost Connor McDavid last season. Other injuries are more like a quick jab to the ribcage – you won’t know the extent of the damage at first, but you just know it hurts like a mother.
The loss of Tyler Pitlick falls into that latter category for the Oilers. President & GM Peter Chiarelli announced that Pitlick will miss the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, after getting tangled up with Jori Lehtra of the St. Louis Blues and injuring his leg on the end boards on Monday.
“I really felt for him,” said coach Todd McLellan, via the Sun. “He was emotional. He had such a positive impact on our team. He’s just finding his way into the league now permanently. To have that happen is tough for the young man.”
The 2010 draft pick had finally figured at thing or two out this season, with eight goals and three assists in 31 games. And while he was a depth forward with 9:55 of ice time per game, the way he played was as a prototypical energy player. These guys knew his injury-plagued journey over the last several seasons, and appreciated every shift he took.
    From Oilers Nation:
In the end, this news is a pretty [crappy] Christmas gift for a player that was working hard to earn every minute of ice he was given. Tyler Pitlick has never scored more than eight goals in a professional season but he had that many already with the Oilers, and it looked as though he was going to become one of the feel stories of the year.
Instead, Pitlick has months of rehab ahead of him in the hopes that he will be able to get back to the level he was trending this season. After signing a one-year deal you also have to wonder what plans the Oilers will have to bring him back for the 2017-18 season. I’d hope that the work he put in this year has earned him another deal with the team, but professional sports can be a cold mistress and we’ll have to wait and see.

Indeed. It’s just a shame that his best season as a pro ends after 21 games.
