New England Patriots untested by struggling Jets

On the Eve of Christmas, the New England Patriots played host to the walking dead, also known as the New York Jets. The Jets, with an opportunity to play spoiler to their rival’s quest for home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, showed absolutely zero effort and looked like a team that is beyond ready to hit the golf course. Tom Brady threw for three touchdowns, LeGarrette Blount ran for two more and Stephen Gostkowski added two field goals as the Patriots completely dismantled the Jets 41-3.

New England led this game 27-0 at half time and Tom Brady took a seat on the bench with 27 seconds left in the third quarter. In his three quarter appearance, Brady completed 17 of 27 passes for 214 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Most would have to agree that this performance locks up Brady’s third MVP award. He has been phenomenal since returning from his four game Deflategate suspension, leading the team to a 10-1 record and compiling 25 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions.
With the Pro Bowl rosters announced last week, LeGarrette Blount was conspicuously left off the roster. He continued to prove his worth as he tallied two more rushing touchdowns, his 16th and 17th scores of the year. Blount is easily one of the best value contracts in football and his knack for converting in short yardage situations cannot be overlooked. His ability to transform the Patriots into a power rushing attack should pay huge dividends in January. He is certainly one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs this year.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots were virtually untested throughout the game. Malcom Butler led the way as he had two interceptions and recovered a fumble. Butler continues to show that he’s not just some guy who made a game winning play in the Super Bowl two years ago. Honestly, it’s difficult to assess the performance of a defense that faces an offense as inept and lifeless as the Jets looked Sunday.
Stephen Gostkowski is worth a mention as he became only the 30th kicker in NFL history to convert 300 career field goals.  After missing four field goals and three extra points in the first 11 games of the season, Gostkowski has been perfect in his last four games. Make no mistake, the Patriots will need Gostkowski to be his normally reliable self in order to make another run at the Lombardi Trophy.

With the win the Patriots reduced their magic number to one for home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. With a win next week (or a Raiders loss), all roads to the Super Bowl will travel through Foxborough. Up next for New England is a road clash with another division rival, the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have won 9 of their last 10 games and are one of the hottest teams in the NFL. It should be a great game as both teams will be battling for playoff positioning.
