Clashes erupted between security forces and protesters in English-speaking areas demanding independence in Cameroon, where at least 17 people have died of wanting to establish a separate state under the name of "Ambazonia", according to Amnesty International.

The authorities in Cameroon have deployed troops and police throughout the English-speaking regions recently, located in the south of the country; to prevent protests called by groups calling for independence, and the establishment of a state they call the name of Ambazonia.

Military helicopters flew low on Sunday, and businesses in the cities of Buya and Bamenda, the main cities in English-speaking regions, were closed last Sunday.

The protests coincided with the 56th anniversary of independence of English-speaking regions from Britain.

English speakers accuse the government, which is dominated by French-speaking areas, of marginalizing them, which the government denies.
