    [ltr]Follow-up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]The US Senate has approved the appointment of the first female CIA director, despite her role in the interrogation program that followed the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.[/ltr]
[ltr]Fifty-four members voted in favor of appointing Gina Haskell as opposition to 45, after a party split over CIA use of interrogation methods under former President George W. Bush, including drowning.[/ltr]
[ltr]Hasebel, 61, a veteran CIA official, oversaw the so-called "Black Site" in Thailand following the September 2001 attacks.[/ltr]
[ltr]Her appointment follows the move of former CIA director Mike Pompeo to the post of US secretary of state.[/ltr]
[ltr]Earlier, Republican Sen. John McCain, who was tortured during his five-year prison term during the Vietnam War, announced his opposition to the nomination of President Donald Trump, Haskell.[/ltr]
[ltr]At the same time, six members of the House from the Democratic Party exceeded their party lines by voting for Hubble's nomination.[/ltr]
[ltr]Among them was Virginia-based Mark Warner, who said Haskell had told him that the agency should not have revived those interrogation techniques.[/ltr]
[ltr]Haskell vowed not to use such methods again even if the president asked.[/ltr]
[ltr]Two members of the Republican Party voted against Haspel's appointment, which meant that she would not have won the post without the support of the Democrats.[/ltr]
[ltr]Haskell, who worked for the CIA for 33 years, spent most of her career as a secret agent.[/ltr]
[ltr]In 2002, the agency chose to run a "black site" in Thailand that used interrogation techniques that a Senate report deemed torture.[/ltr]

[ltr]At least 119 people were tortured by the United States after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, according to a Senate report issued in 2014.[/ltr]
[ltr]Human rights groups say Haskel has left Thailand to oversee other US torture practices, but it is not clear what role she played, since the CIA has included her work in secrecy.[/ltr]
[ltr]Previously, Trump called for the US authorities to resume waterboarding in interrogations of terror suspects[/ltr]

    Information / follow-up ...
The US Senate on Thursday approved the appointment of Gina Haspell, director of the US intelligence agency.
Hasebel was voted 54, while 45 votes against it. Six Democrats voted for President Trump's nominee for the post. Republicans, two of whom voted against it.
Gina Hasebel, who has been working for the CIA for 33 years, becomes the first woman to head the agency.
Haskell has been serving as director of the Central Intelligence Agency since March, when President Trump announced the nomination of former director of the agency Mike Pompeo for the post of foreign secretary after the dismissal of Rex Tillerson.
Hasebel has been approved by the Senate despite her criticism of the use of torture methods against detainees in a secret CIA prison in Thailand that Hasebel was running.
